CEB711 Structural Design II – Due Date -TBC

Pavement Design – 5%
A major road widening project requires constructing nine link roads (shown in Figure 1). The
design traffic flows were obtained from revised forecast traffic produced by a traffic
consultant. The forecast traffic flow was based on the Average Annual Daily Traffic in 2010
with percentage of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) as presented in Table 1. The geotechnical
report confirmed that sub grade material is expected to be “chalk” and in situ CBR testing
indicated that CBR of 15% would be adequate for design. The design options are expected to
reflect adequate consideration on resilient, sustainability to meet key policies on sustainable
infrastructure development.

You will be required to provide pavement design options for a 40 year design life for each link
road. The preferred material for the bound layers are DBM50, HDM50, EME2, CRCP, CRCB
and low noise Thin surfacing course system. The deliverables for this project are:

1. A pavement design report, no more than 2000 words, which must cover design traffic,
foundation design, pavement design options, design considerations, surface properties
based on HD 36/06, sustainability and resilient statements. Separate appendices
could be provided in order to show design calculations and permitted pavement
options (layer thicknesses) according to Appendix 7/1 in Manual of Contract
Documents for Highway Works, Volume 2 Series 700.

2. Drawings of typical edge details for links E and H with flexible and concrete pavement
construction based on Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works volume 3.
Assume that the link E will be constructed in cutting and H will be on the embankment.
