CHAPTER -8

MOTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
It will enable the student to:
⚫ Find out values of distance and displacement in different
situations.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISTANCE AND
DISPLACEMENT
NUMERICAL BASED ON DISTANCE
AND DISPLACEMENT
Numerical-1
An object moves from point A to point B to point C, then back to
point B and then to point C along the line shown in the figure below.
a) Find the distance covered by the moving object.
b) Find the magnitude and direction of the displacement of the object.

.
a) Distance = AB + BC + CB + BC = 5 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 17
km

b) The magnitude of the Displacement is equal to the

distance between the final point C and the initial point A
= AC = 9 km
The direction of the displacement is the direction of the
ray AB.
Numerical-2
A runner travels around rectangle track with length = 50
meters and width = 20 meters. After
travelling around rectangular track two times, runner comes
back to starting point. Determine distance and displacement.

⚫ Perimeter of rectangle = 2(50 meters) + 2(20 meters)

= 100 meters + 40 meters
= 140 meters.
⚫ Travels around rectangle 2 times = 2(140 meters)
= 280 meters.
Therefore, Distance = 280 m.
⚫ Displacement = 0 m.
(the runner return to the starting point)
Numerical-3
An object moves from point A to point C along the rectangle
shown in the figure below. (AB=5km,BC=3km)
a) Find the distance covered by the moving object.
b) Find the magnitude of the displacement of the object.

a) Distance = AB + BC = 5 + 3 = 8 km

b) Initial point is A and the final point is C,

hence the magnitude of the displacement is equal the
diagonal AC of the rectangle and is calculated using
Pythagoras theorem as follows

AC2 = AB2 + BC2 = 52 + 32 = 25 + 9 = 34

Displacement=AC = √34 km
Numerical-4
A person walks 4 meters east, then walks 3 meters north.
Determine distance and displacement.
Numerical-5
A farmer moves along the boundary of a square field of side 10 m in 40 s. What will
be the magnitude of displacement of the farmer at the end of 2 minutes 20 seconds?
Given, side of the square field = 10m

Therefore,
Perimeter = 10 m x 4 = 40 m
Farmer moves along the boundary in 40s.
Total time=2 m 20 s = 2 x 60 s + 20 s = 140 s

Since in 40 s distance covered by farmer =40 m

So, in 1s distance covered by farmer = 40/40m=1m
Therefore, in 140s distance covered by farmer = 1 × 140 m
= 140 m
Now, number of rounds to cover 140m along the boundary
= Total distance/Perimeter
=140m/40m
=3.5rounds
Thus after 3.5 round farmer will at point C of the field.
Therefore, Displacement AC= √(10m)2+(10m)2
=√100+100
= √ 200
=10 √ 2m
Thus, after 2 minute 20 second the displacement of
farmer will be equal to
10 √2m from initial position.
Numerical-6
An athlete completes one round of a circular track of diameter 200 m in 40 s. What
will be the distance covered and the displacement at the end of 2 minutes 20 s?
⚫ Given that the diameter of the circular track (d) = 200 m
⚫ The radius of the track, r = d /2 = 100 m
⚫ We know that circumference of a circular path is
= 2πr
= 2π(100) = 200π m
⚫ And given that athlete complete one round in 40 s
In 40 s, athlete covers a distance of 200π m
⚫ In 1s, the athlete will cover a distance = 200𝜋/40
⚫ The athlete runs for 2 min 20 s(140 second),
Hence total distance covered in 140 s is = 200 × 22 × 140 / 40 × 7
= 2200 m
⚫ Now, number of rotation to cover 220m along the boundary
= Total distance/circumference
=2200m/ 200π m
=3.5rounds
⚫ In 3.5 rounds, Displacement =AB=Diameter =200m.
⚫ Since displacement is equal to the shortest distance between
the initial and final position of the athlete, displacement of
the athlete will be equal to the diameter of the circular track
Displacement of the athlete = 200 m.

⚫ Hence Distance covered by the athlete in 2 min 20 s is 2200

m and his displacement is 200 m.
Numerical-7
A body is moving along a circular path of radius r .What will be the
displacement of the body when it completes
a) one revolution
b) half a revolution
c) 3/4th of a revolution
d) 1/4th of a revolution
