Actions taken by the

United Nations Organization to combat climate change

Climate change is the greatest environmental battle the world has ever faced. It is a fight

that in order to win people around the world and all countries must rump up their efforts, because

after all though different outlooks and economies divides people and countries still they are on

the same roof under a common atmosphere.

Prior to the global acceptance and declaration of Climate Change as a global issue there

are those political leaders, business and industries executives, and other experts on environment

who denies its existence.

The United Nations Organization is one among those thousand organizations who have

played an essential role in raising the issue on Climate Change to the front pages of the world’s

media. The organization has put Climate Change in the in-tray of the Heads of State and

Government, as well as the chief executive officers of business and industries.

Since then, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published three

important reports, and the more than 2,000 scientists and experts of the IPCC have put an end to

any doubts in the science.

On the year 2007, Climate Change truly become an issue of highest concern to the UN,

because there is now the full understanding that the phenomenon will fundamentally affect the

way the world operates in the twenty-first-century, from health care, aid and water to economic

activity, humanitarian assistance, peace building and security concern.

The UN through the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has also

been at the cutting edge of assisting in the development of creative new carbon markets.

The UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) in partnership with the UN Foundation and

Asian Banks has piloted a project that has brought solar power to 100,000 people in India. The

benefits for the global community may be reduced emissions.

The UN environment Assembly is a also one of the action set up by UN, a decision

making body who sets priorities for global environment policies and develop international

environmental law, which serves a pivotal role in the issue on Climate Change.

Through its ministerial declaration and resolutions, the Assembly provides leadership,

catalyzes intergovernmental action on the environment, and contributes to the implementation of

the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The SDG acceleration actions are initiatives voluntarily undertaken by countries and

other stakeholders to contribute to a speeded up implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The UN is the only forum in which an agreement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas

(GHG) emissions beyond 2012 can realistically be brokered among the 190 plus countries.

The assistance extended by the UN Organization in various ways, helping governments

and stakeholders make all the environmental agreements a reality are just a few among the

several contributions it had taken to combat Climate Change.
