DIRECTIONS: Solve the problem using the actual equipment you have in Electro-Pnuematics. Draw your electro-
pnuematic design on the space provided below.

1. Using a sorting device, articles are to be sorted out from a conveyor belt. By pressing the pushbutton switch, the
piston rod of a single acting cylinder pushes the article off the conveyor belt. When the pushbutton is released,
the piston rod returns to its rear end position.

2. Using a cutting device, sheets of paper are to be cut to size. By pressing two pushbutton switches, the cutting
blade is advanced and the sheet of paper is cut. After releasing one or both push button switches, the cutting

blade is returned to its start position.

3. Using a tipping device, liquid is to be poured from a vat. By pressing both or any of the two pushbutton switches,
the vat is tilted and the liquid is emptied. After releasing the pushbutton switches, the vat is returned to the
upright position.

4. A notch is to be punched in the workpiece by a pneumatic cylinder. The workpiece may be fed from any one of
the three work stations. The punching operation is to be triggered when two sensors emit a signal. The signaling
elements a,b,and c, are installed for sensing. The cylinder returns to its retracted position when the part is
pulled out of the device. It must be possible to operate the punching device from three sides.

5. A swivel bridge is brought into the desired position by means of a double-acting cylinder. The cylinder is
controlled at will by means of two pushbuttons. The forward stroke must be capable of being controlled from
two different points.

6. The arriving workpieces are distributed to four conveyors by means of a switching section. Shifting the required
position is initiated by pushbuttons and must be possible in any sequence. There will be two cylinders to be used
and both of them are in single package. In order for the workpiece be distributed on the first conveyor, A- and B-
(both cylinders are retracted); For the second conveyor, A+ and B- (only cylinder A is extended); for the third
conveyor, A- and B+; and for the fourth, A+ and B+.

7. Using a double-acting cylinder, a work piece is removed and tipped onto a conveyor belt. The operation is to be
started using a push button. An acknowledgment signal is required when the piston is fully extended, to ensure
that the work piece has been tipped onto the belt. The return stroke is to be automatic.

8. The clamping of a work piece is to be controlled by either of two pushbuttons. A further push button is to
control declamping. Clamping is only possible when a work piece is present. Declamping is to be interlocked
during drilling. The clamping speed is to be slow and adjustable. Declamping is to be very fast.

9. A container of washers is to be dipped in and out of the cleaning bath. The “START” and “STOP” for the
continuous movement is to be achieved by actuating pushbutton each. On actuating the “STOP” pushbutton,
the container should stop at the top (retracted position). By switching off the main valve, the container should
not fall into the bath with an impact.

10. Components are to be stamped with a stamping device. By pressing two pushbutton switches, the die is pushed
down and the component is stamped. When stamping pressure has been achieved, the die is returned to its
start position.

11. A pushbutton is to control the forward stroke. After the piston rod has reached the forward end position, the
components are to be pressed together for 10 seconds. Then the piston rod is to return automatically to the
initial position. The return stroke must occur even if the start push button is still pressed. A new start signal may
only become effective after the initial position has been reached and after the push button has been released.

12. A metal component are to be cleaned in an acid bath. These components are placed in a basket which is hung
from a hook on a double-acting cylinder. A single actuation of a push button causes the basket to be
continuously lowered into and pulled out of the acid bath. The sequence stops automatically after one (1) cycle.
Sensors B0 and B1 check the fully retracted and extended positions, respectively of the cylinder.
