PROJECT: HYDRAULIC WORKS – DRINKING WATER

STORAGE TANK

CUSTOMER: OBRAS Y PROYECTOS JW SAS

WATERPROOFING MEMBRANE: FLAGON AT

SOPREMA REFERENCE: P. GRAZIOLI

HYDRAULIC WORKS – DRINKING WATER STORAGE TANK

HORIZONTAL PLANE

1. SUPPORTING ELEMENT OR SUBSTRATE

The supporting element is composed of concrete and it must:

 be regularized, smooth as possible, free from debris and other
irregularities that may puncture the waterproofing layers;
 be dry and free of moisture;
 be stable over time;
 be chemically compatible with the roof system components;
 suitable for mechanical system.

2. COMPENSATION LAYER

This ensures the surface evenness of the substrate, preventing defects,

debris or other irregularities from puncturing the waterproof layer.
It is composed of GEOLAND HT 500 gr/sqm, a high tenacity non-woven
needle punctured on both sides made of 100% virgin and high tenacity
polypropylene short fibres. They are thermally treated and then chilled by
calendar.

Application:
GEOLAND HT is loose laid without tension and must be free from folds and
wrinkles with approx. 10-15 cm overlap of the edges; place in direct contact
with the support avoiding any gaps or voids between the substrate and the
geotextile.

Note: The mechanical properties of the geotextile used will still have to be
evaluated based on actual conditions of the site.

3. WATERPROOF MEMBRANE

Supply and laying of synthetic PVC-P single layer membrane obtained by

co-extrusion FLAGON AT.
The raw materials used in the production of FLAGON AT allow to obtain a
product that may come into contact with drinking water according to the
main tests of national certification under which was tested.
Features:
 Compatible with drinking water
 High resistance to weathering and UV rays
 High mechanical resistance
 High puncture resistance
Specifications:
Tensile strength (L/T) > 17 N/mm2 UNI EN 527-3
Elongation at break (L/T) ≥ 300% UNI EN 527-3

Application:
Laying system:
 Mechanically fixed with prepunched galvanised steel Flag bar
around the perimeter on the vertical wall close to the corner
 8 cm overlap for welding field sheet
All welding including detail work to be carried out in dry conditions using:
 Leister automatic welder
 Leister hot air gun
Waterproofing test and control: no destructive mechanical test with
Welding tester, pneumatic welding test and test of triple points and patches
with vacuum cap.
Setting performed by technicians approved by SOPREMA srl.
Finishing and accessories composed by elements produced and approved
by SOPREMA srl.

Note: it is advisable to unrool and lay down the waterproof membrane on

the support at least 30 minutes before its application.

4. PERIMETER FIXING ELEMENT

Supply and installation of perimeter fixing element consisting of a

prepunched galvanized steel bar. Fixing with a suitable fastener.

Insert Flag Bar End Protectors at the junction between two adjacent bars.

5. FIXING ELEMENT (TO PROVIDE WHETHER THERE IS A PRESENCE OF LOCALIZED

DEPRESSIONS ON THE WATERPROOF ELEMENT, FOR EXAMPLE, PUMPS AREA)

In the areas with localized depression, apply the prepunched galvanised

steel Flag bar fixed every 25 cm and placed a distance of 1 m between the
fastening lines. The screws or the bolts must be of 316 stainless steel with
flathead type.
It must be places Flag Bar End Protectors between the two adjacent bars.
Apply strips of FLAGON AT welded on the below membrane (see attached
detail 4).
The FLAGON AT strip must be of the same thickness as the laid PVC
membrane.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

- The proposed membrane is not suitable for applications in tanks

where the presence of water is expected with constant temperature
during the day and during the year above 35 ° C; contact the
SOPREMA Technical Office to find an appropriate system to protect
the PVC membrane.

- If the tank is open and the membrane is subjected to wind extraction

force, it is necessary to perform a mechanical fixing calculation
according to current legislation so that the membrane is correctly
fixed to the support.

- Apply profiles and fixation elements in 316 stainless steel if the tank
contain aggressive substances that are not compatible with standard
Flag metal profiles (seawater, acids or other).
In any case, contact the SOPREMA Technical Department to verify the
compatibility of the PVC membrane with the dissolved substances in
the water contained in the tank.

- In case of underground tank, to ensure the correct functioning of the

SOPREMA waterproofing system applied on the internal surfaces of
the storage tank, it is necessary to provide an adequate waterproofing
system to be applied on the external surfaces of the tank.

(for complete data refer to the attached data sheet)

Manufactured in a plant certified UNI EN ISO 9001 (Quality management

system) and UNI EN ISO 14001 (environmental management system).

Application:
Laying system:
 PVC Flagmetal strip, 5 cm wide. It is a zinc steel strip coated with
Flagon PVC membrane. Fix each 2 meters using rawlplugs and
appropriate fixings. Weld on them the PVC waterproof membrane.
 PVC Flagmetal termination strip, 7 cm wide, around perimeter top.
It is a zinc steel strip coated with Flagon PVC membrane. Fix using
rawlplugs and appropriate fixings. Weld on them the PVC
waterproof membrane.
All welding including detail work to be carried out in dry conditions using:

Waterproofing test and control: no destructive mechanical test with
Welding tester and test of triple points and patches with vacuum cap.
Setting performed by technicians approved by SOPREMA srl.
Finishing and accessories composed by elements produced and approved
by SOPREMA srl.

In the case of open tanks, capping and counter-profiles in galvanised steel

or stainless steel are then installed above the PVC Flagmetal termination
strip.

Note: the Flagmetal termination strip shall not be sealed on top with
silicone mastic or with permanent sealants. The profile must allow the
release of any air or gas under the sealing element.

Note: it is advisable to unrool and lay down the waterproof membrane on

the support at least 30 minutes before its application.

4. PIPELINES

To ensure a watertight seal, you need to provide flanging and counter-

flanging for all pipelines of any diameter found in the tanks.
At the entrance of tank pipelines, in the brickwork, provide a suitable 316
stainless steel flange with single-end stud screws, also made of 316
stainless steel.
Prepare a section of the liner, placing the counter-flange on it to trace the
position of the holes of the stud screws. Die-cut and remove the inside ring.
Repeat the same operation for the neoprene seals with minimum thickness
of 3 mm. Effect a “sandwich” seal, i.e. on and under the sealing element.
The stud screws are tightened by 316 stainless steel bolts.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

the water contained in the tank.

- In case of underground tank, to ensure the correct functioning of the

SOPREMA waterproofing system applied on the internal surfaces of
the storage tank, it is necessary to provide an adequate waterproofing
system to be applied on the external surfaces of the tank.
