The Refrigeration Management Workbook

• The workbook includes sample program and

plan templates for your use.
• It contains implementation checklists for each
option.
• It also explains the steps to achieve LEED
documentation and credits.
Step 1 Checklist Chose Option for EAp3
Option 1 – Previous LEED Certification
Submittal Template Select this option if the building was previously
certified under LEED-NC, CS or Schools. The
Choose an option project should have met the requirements of

 Option 1
the previous Refrigerant Management
prerequisite.

 Option 2

 Option 3 Option 2 – No CFC-Based Refrigerants
If the project was not previously certified, use
this option if no refrigerants are used on the
project or if no refrigerants contain CFCs.
Note: This project may be eligible for EAc5.

Option 3 – CFC-Based Refrigerants in Use

Use this option if the project was not
previously certified and still uses some CFC-
based refrigerants. Note: This project will not
be eligible for EAc5.

Economic Analysis
• Energy, demand, and maintenance saving realized
from upgrading equipment may offset the cost of
converting or replacing existing systems
• If savings do not offset costs, detailed calculations
and the results of a qualified third party audit must
confirm that CFC conversion or replacement is
economically infeasible – greater than 10 year
simple payback
(Table 3.1 is a summary of this analysis)

base building systems, select this option.

Option 3 – Performance Calculation: Minimized

Refrigerant Impact
Use this option to calculate refrigerant impact for
the project. Total refrigerant impact per ton must
be less than or equal to 100 to achieve points for
this credit.

Can change values with adequate documentation
Schools can use alternative values for equipment
life if they can document their claim.

For example, if a chiller has a manufacturers

guarantee and long-term service contract for a
30 year life, this value can be used instead.
