Men's Style Trend Concepts A/W 21/22

Phantasmagoria
Disquieting designs offer escapism
and opulence in dark times

Embrace dark drama and reach far back into history

to create designs that offer a sense of escapism and
protection for a digital future

Action Points
1. Embrace a darker aesthetic: horror themes are offering
a sense of escapism and a commentary on uncertain
times across film, TV, streaming and gaming. This will
inspire a shift towards the versatility and subversive
comfort of black for menswear, paired with a palette of
deep, colours and materials. The focus here is on darks
as a statement of luxurious individualism, rather than a
uniform.
2. Join the digital renaissance: escape the trend wheel of
revolving 20th century decades, and dig deeper into
history to discover forgotten inspirations that are waiting
to be upgraded into the present. Research across fashion
and furnishings, interiors and art, and focus on both
aesthetics and technique. Use materials to give
contemporary silhouettes an element of drama and
timelessness, underpinned by distinct a sense of
#artinfashion.
3. Enter the virtual realms of gaming: 3D design tools are
advancing and creating more sophisticated in-game
survivalist clothing and hardware designs, narrowing the
gap between digital and IRL fashion. Look for
collaborations and synergies as virtual garments start to
create real demand in the growing men's tech and
outerwear market, and vice versa.

Industrial Works

Bridges Over Walls

@mouslamrabat

The concept: A disquieting vision of industrial urban

landscapes serves as a backdrop for skate punks and
H Lorenzo
streetwear crews in this dystopian theme.
Sihouette & styling: Based on classic skate and oversized
workwear shapes, this is a denim-focused direction — not
just as a basic, but as an inspiring and malleable material
to be deconstructed, reconfigured and embellished with a
rebellious creativity.
Materials & finish: Look to biodegradable organic black
pigments or low-impact laser treatments to reflect a sense
of urban grittiness, focusing on smog-wash treatments or
digitally eroded surfaces.
Relevant for: casual denim, skate, streetwear

Dark Arts

Endless Joy
@kidsuper Heresy

The concept: This artful graphics direction that blends the long-
running taste for otherworldly escapism and all things horror with a
growing appreciation of art in fashion.
Prints & graphics: Take inspiration from mystical art across the ages,
from fine art to folk, and work with artists, illustrators or licensed
archives to find and develop engaging narrative motifs. Look to
digital printing as the preferred process, both in terms of rendering
quality and placement control, and sustainability benefits. Use
embroideries for more primal markings.
Relevant for: woven shirts, cut & sew, T-shirts, jackets

Braulio Amado @youthsinbalaclava

The concept: With an unsettled global mood, punk and DIY-inspired

looks will resonate with the youth market. Evolving from
#expressiveprints, rebellious and creative mark-making underpins OAMC

these chaotic prints and graphics. This artistic look chimes with the
current demand for individuality and #artinfashion trends.
Prints & graphics: Ink is the medium of choice here, capturing the
stream of consciousness of a sketchbook. Tap into a darker
aesthetic via a limited monochrome and blood-red palette. Consider
working with illustrators or licensed work, such as Ralph Steadman’s
portfolio, for #creativecollab capsule drops.
