    1. Consider the sentences below and determine which thematic roles the bracketed phrases can be
    said to carry.
    a. [Michael] loudly announced [the election victory].
    b. Jamie cut the ribbon [with a pair of scissors].
    c. The rocket was launched [from central command].

    2. Assign tree structures to the bracketed phrases below: (using X-bar theory)
    a. The government [faces difficult debates].
    b. [the construction of a new building]
    c. Arin was [so envious of her brother].

    3. In accordance with X-bar theory, draw complete trees (i.e. include all the Specifiers and all the I-
    nodes with the relevant features) of the following sentences.
    a. The workers baked a cake carefully.
    b. William brought some fruits from traditional market.
