A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 7

Solar and Lunar Eclipse
I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, student should be able to,

a. Identify the two types of eclipse.
b. Point out the difference between solar and lunar eclipse.
c. Discuss how solar and lunar eclipse occur.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Solar and Lunar Eclipse
B. References: Science Grade 7 Learner’s Material Module
C. Instructional Materials: Visual aids, flashlight, ball, activity Sheets
D. Skills Remembering, understanding, analyzing
E. Values Integration Collaboration, cooperation, teamwork
F. Science Concepts Eclipses- An eclipse takes place when Earth or the moon passes
through a shadow of another heavenly body. Lunar- refers to the moon. Solar- refers to
the Sun. Umbra- the part of the shadow in which all of the light has been blocked.
Penumbra- only part of the light is blocked so the light is dimmed but not totally absent.

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activity
Everyone, please stand and let us pray. Miss (prayer)
Abegail please lead the prayer.
Good morning class!
Good morning Ma’am!
Please take your seats.
Thank you!
How are you today?
Great ma’am
Good to hear that.
I’m going to check the attendance. Those who
are not in their seats will be marked absent.
Please pass your assignments in front. At the
count of 10 all papers must be in. 1, 2, 3,…,10.
(Students pass their assignment)
B. Review on the past lesson
Let’s recall our lesson yesterday.
What was our topic yesterday? Yesterday, we tackled about seasons.
Very good!
Why do seasons change? Seasons change because the Earth revolves
around the Sun.
Very good!
Is that the only reason? No ma’am. Another reason is because the
Earth is tilted.
How does the Earth’s tilt affect our season? Because the Earth is tilted, only one
Hemisphere receives direct rays. That
hemisphere will experience summer.
How about the Earth’s revolution around the
Sun, how does it affect our seasons? Since, the Earth goes around the Sun, there
will be times when the Northern hemisphere
will receive direct rays of the Sun and times
when the Southern Hemisphere will receive
direct rays.
Very good!
C. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
I have something to show you. You may have
played this a lot especially during blackouts.
I need a volunteer to hold the flashlight for me.
I’ll show you how to make shadow animals.
I will form shadow animals using my hand. I
want you to guess what animals they are. Do
you understand?
(Starts showing shadow animals)
Did you enjoy our little game? Yes ma’am.
Well, I’m glad that you did.
Actually, that activity is related to our lesson
today.
2. Presentation
Today, we will discuss about Eclipses.
Before we proceed with our lesson, let’s first
our objectives
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be (Students read the objectives)
able to:
1. Explain how solar and lunar eclipse occur.
3. Discussion
A while ago, we played with shadows right?
As I have mentioned, shadow is related our
topic which is Eclipses.
In our activity, how were the shadows formed? When you placed your hand in front of the
flashlight, the shadows formed.
Alright that is correct!
What happened on the surface where the
shadows landed? When the shadows landed on the board, the
area where the shadows landed darkened.

Okay, very good! Yes ma’am!

When you block a light source by an object, a
shadow of that object is cast. The shadow will
darken the object on which it falls on.
In the same way, as the members of the solar
system move around, they block light from the
Sun and form shadows. This phenomenon is
called Eclipse.
An Eclipse takes place when the Earth or the
Moon passes through a shadow of another
planetary body.
Can we see the shadows that the planets form?
No.
Why is that?
Because those planets are too far away from
Very Good! Since the planets are too far from us.
us, we cannot see the shadows that they form.
The only shadows that we can observe are the
shadows of the Moon and Earth.
There are two types of eclipses and what are
those Cheska?
Very good! That is correct! The two types of The two types of eclipses are solar eclipse
eclipses are solar and lunar eclipse. and lunar eclipse.
Solar eclipse takes place when the Sun, the
Moon and the Earth are in a perfect or near
perfect straight line, respectively.

Look at the figure here in front. Where is the

Moon in relation to the Sun and Earth during The moon is in between the Earth and the
solar eclipse? Sun.
Very Good!
Okay. So, during a solar eclipse, the Moon is
in between the Sun and the Earth. In other
words the Moon blocks the Sun during a solar
eclipse.
Do you get it? Do you have any questions?
None ma’am
Okay.
So, you can observe an unequal shading on the
shadow of the moon. On the Moon’s shadow,
what do we call the outer, light gray shade of On the Moon’s shadow, the outer, light gray
shadow? shade of shadow is called the penumbra.
You got it right!
How about the inner, darker shade in the
shadow? The inner, darker shade in the shadow is
called the umbra.
When you are standing within the umbra, you
will see the Sun disappear from you. The
surroundings will appear like it is early
evening. In this case, you are experiencing the
total solar eclipse.
On the other hand, if you are in the penumbra,
you will see the Sun partially covered by the
Moon. In this case, you are experiencing the
partial solar eclipse. There are no dramatic
changes in the surroundings here and there is
no noticeable dimming of sunlight.
Do you understand class?
Yes ma’am!
Do you have any questions?
None ma’am.
Now, lets move on to the Lunar Eclipse
Please look at the illustration. What have you The Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned and the
observed? Earth is in between the Sun and Moon.
Very good!
During a lunar eclipse, the Moon will be in the
shadow of the Earth.
In a lunar eclipse, the shadow of the Earth also
darkens the moon.

The shadow is wider than the moon. It also has

an umbra and penumbra.
When the entire moon is in the umbra, it will
look totally dark. At this time you will
experience a total lunar eclipse.
But when the moon passes only through a part
of the umbra, a partial lunar eclipse happen. A
part, of the moon will look dark while the rest
will be lighter.

Do you Understand? Do you have any We understand ma’am. We have no more

questions? questions.
4. Activity
Okay, very good! So now let’s proceed to our
activity.
Group yourselves into 5 groups by counting (Starts counting off)
off. (Perform the activity)
5. Generalization
Again, what are the two types of eclipses? Solar and Lunar eclipse.
How do eclipses occur? How do you explain Solar eclipse happen when the Sun, Earth
the relationship of frequency and wavelength? and Moon are aligned. When the moon is in
between the Earth and Sun it casts a shadow
towards the earth. That is the Solar eclipse.
Okay very good!
How about Lunar Eclipse? Lunar Eclipse happen when the Sun, Earth
and Moon are aligned and the Earth is in
between the other two. The earth will cast a
shadow that would land on the Moon.

Very good! You really have understood our

lesson. Give yourselves a round of applause.
6. Application
Never look directly at the Sun, eclipsed or
otherwise, without any protective eyewear. The
Sun’s UV radiation can burn the retinas in your
eyes leading to permanent damage or even
blindness. The best way to safely watch a total
solar eclipse is to wear protective eclipse
glasses or to project an image of the eclipsed
Sun using a pinhole projector.

IV. Evaluation

V. ASSIGNMENT
Collect some beliefs about eclipses. You may ask older people in your family or in the
community or, you may read on some of these beliefs. Write your answers on a ½ crosswise.
