ASSIGNMENT 7 & 8: SECTIONS OF SOLIDS & DEVELOPMENT OF SURFACES

1. A pentagonal prism, base side 30 mm and height 50 mm, lies on its base on VP with one of the sides
perpendicular to HP. Draw its projections, the true shape of the cut section, and develop its surface as
a single piece if the top portion of the solid is removed after being cut by a section plane:
a. normal to HP, inclined 35º to VP, and cutting the axis 25 mm from the base.
b. normal to HP, inclined 35º to VP, and cutting the axis 10 mm from the base.
c. normal to HP, inclined 70º to VP, and touching the axis at the top.

d. normal to VP, inclined 35º to HP, and located 10 mm from the axis, further away from the XY
line. The smaller portion is removed.
2. Solve the above question for a pyramid of same dimensions and orientation.
3. Solve the above question for a cylinder of base diameter 50 mm and height 50 mm, and same
orientation (i.e., lying on its base on VP).
4. Solve the above question for a cone of same dimensions and orientation.
5. A hexagonal prism, base side 30 mm and height 60 mm, lies on HP on a rectangular face, with its
axis parallel to VP. Draw its projections, true shape of the cut section, and develop the surface of the
truncated (smaller) portion as a single piece if it is cut by a section plane:
a. normal to HP, inclined 30º to the VP, and cutting the axis 20 mm from one (top) end.

b. normal to VP, inclined 30º to the HP, and cutting the axis 20 mm from one (top) end.
6. Solve the above problem for a pyramid of identical dimensions, lying on HP on one of its triangular
faces with the axis parallel to VP.
7. Solve the above problem for a cylinder of base diameter 50 mm and height 60 mm, if it is lying on
HP on one of its generators, with the axis parallel to VP.
8. Solve the above problem for a cone of identical dimensions, lying on HP on one of its generators with
the axis parallel to VP.
9. A solid of height 60 mm rests on a point on its base on HP with the axis inclined 30º to HP. It is cut
by 2 section planes such that one plane is horizontal and passes through the top of the axis, and the
other plane is normal to both the reference planes and passes through the bottom of the axis. Draw its
projections, true shape of the section and develop the surface of the remaining solid as one continuous
piece if the upper portion of the axis and the raised portion of the base are removed. The solid is:
a. a pentagonal prism of base side 30 mm and one corner resting on HP.
b. a cylinder of base diameter 50 mm.
10. A solid of height 60 mm rests on its base on HP. It is cut by 2 section planes perpendicular to VP and
inclined to HP at 60º and 45º. Both planes intersect at the midpoint of the axis. The apex is removed.
Draw true shape of the section, and develop the surface as 1 piece if:
a. the solid is a hexagonal pyramid of base side 30mm, with 2 sides perpendicular to VP.
b. the solid is a cone with base diameter 50 mm.
11. A pyramid, base side 30 mm, height 60 mm, rests on its base on HP with one side parallel to VP. Find
the shortest length of line drawn around its lateral surfaces, and draw its projections if:
a. the line starts and ends from one of the base corners.
b. the line starts and ends from the midpoint of one of the base sides.
12. Draw the projections of a cone and show on its lateral surface:
a. the shortest possible line starting from a point on the base and ending at the same point.
b. a circle of maximum possible size if the lateral surface is a semicircle.
