Building morphology

Morphology in architecture is the study of the evolution of form within the built

environment. This concept describes changes in the formal syntax of buildings and
cities as their relationship to people evolves and changes.

Often morphology describes processes, such as in the evolution of a design concept

from first conception to production, but can also be understood as the categorical
study in the change of buildings and their use from a historical perspective.

The main design of building morphology factors that can be consider are plan shape,
building size, storey height, total height and planning efficiency.

The Background of UiTM Library’s Cafe

Uitm library’s cafe normally called as Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR). in
April 2003, the Library Division was fully operational on its own building. It is led by a
Deputy Chief Librarian and assisted by 4 librarians and 22 support staff. This building
have until 3rd floor and they have ample necessities such as books, chairs, study
desks and also cafe in ground floor.

The cafe was also build so that students and staff can have some snack after or
before study or doing their works. This cafe offers variety of food and drinks. For
example, they offer crackers, mineral water, juice box and they also have breakfast
such as nasi lemak and fried noodles. Library users are allowed to eat and drink in
the cafe but do not allow outside carry in.

Total Height : 4m

Wall = (23+23+14+14) x 5

Area = 23m x 14m

= 322m

GFA = 370m ÷ 322m

= 1.15m

No. Factor that influence on the Explanation

cost of the project
1. Plan Shape a) Plan shape effect upon the overall cost
of the project. The most economical
shape of the plan is square.

b) Based on project that we choose, they

construct a square plan. The more
simple the plan, the lesser cost required.

c) Also, by having a square shape plan,

less air condition installation needed
less volume of air need to be treated.

d) Both will reduce the cost neither the

electricity while using the space or
amount of installation.

2. Building Size a) The main factor of this project is to

expend the cafe area. It is because
many student come to the cafe and they
felt so uncomfortable.

b) Larger building has lower unit costs than

smaller size project. It is due to the
economical theory of economies of
scale.

c) The smaller the project take a

disproportionate amount of time longer
to design and this will increase the cost
to design in the inside of the building to
make it look wide.

d) Calculation of the building size :

Total wall area ÷ Total floor area

= 296 ÷ 322

= 0.9

3. Storey Height a) The more the storey height, the higher

the cost required.

b) Based on this project, it is very

economical because it do not need a
longer services and water pipe to supply
sanitary appliances.

c) Also, it will not need a larger cooling

source required and longer cables to
install. So, this will reduce the cost on
services and maintenance of the
building.
4. Total Height a) If the height of the building increases, so
the cost of the construction will also
increases.

b) Based on this project, the height of the

building is very efficient.

c) It is because the height of the building is

not too high. This will decrease the cost on
the material of the construction to make the
building more strong.

d) For example, they can only use pad

foundation to built this building and it does
not required an expensive plant such as
tower crane and temporary elevators.

e) When the height of the building decrease,

fire protection also decrease. They will not
have to install many fire protection.

f) Also, there will be decreasing on

maintenance cost. For example, there would
not have to install lift.

g) Because of decreasing of the total height

of the building, the cost of labour on
construction, engineering, and maintenance
will also decrease.
5. Planning Efficiency a) The way space can be utilized with this
given project may vary considerably.

b) Based on this project, the designer

attempt to make the best use of space.
They reduce the circulation area to an
acceptable minimum to aim an
economic layout.

c) They have no toilet in the library cafe.

Users can go to the toilet on the second
floor of the library. So this save the
space only for the usable area.

d) The design in the library’s cafe are also

appropriate because it makes future
adaption, conversion easier and less
expensive but at the same time it is
comfortable for the users.

e) Usable area divided by total area is the

formula to know the efficiency of the
building.

Efficiency factor = 296 ÷ 322

= 91%
6. Site Considerations a) The size of the site is determined by the
proposed project type. So the cost of the
project can be affected by its location.

b) Based on this project, they choose a

good ground-bearing capacity. By this,
the library’s cafe will not have to get the
best quality of material to built a
foundation.

c) Also, they also do not need expert

labour to construct the building and
install services around the building. This
will reduce the cost of labour indeed.

d) The method of construction also can be

easily done because the building is very
simple and not hard to construct.

e) The better the condition of the ground,

the lesser cost required by client. This
building also can be construct in short
term.
