The Lagrangian Elasticity Tensor for a Hyperelastic material

Abstract

1. The Lagrangian Elasticity Tensor (C):

For a hyperelastic material with strain energy density given by ψ, the Lagrangian elas-
ticity tensor can be derived as:

∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ 2

C=4 1⊗1+ (I1 1 − C) ⊗ (I1 1 − C) + I C −T ⊗ C −T
∂I1 ∂I1 ∂I2 ∂I2 ∂I3 ∂I3 3
∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ
I3 1 ⊗ C −T + C −T ⊗ 1

+ (1 ⊗ (I1 1 − C) + (I1 1 − C) ⊗ 1) +
∂I2 ∂I1 ∂I3 ∂I1

∂ ψ
I3 (I1 1 − C) ⊗ C −T + C −T ⊗ (I1 1 − C)

+
∂I3 ∂I2

∂ψ ∂ψ −1 −1 −1 −1

+ (1 ⊗ 1 − 1  1) + I3 C ⊗ C − C  C (1)
∂I2 ∂I3
where C represents the right Cauchy Green deformation tensor.
For an isotropic material this tensor is objective (frame invariant), so that:

C̄ijkl = Qip Qjq Qkm Qln Cpqmn (2)

The components C1111 and C2222 are as follows:

∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ 2 ∂ 2ψ

C1111 = 4 + (I1 − C11 )2 + −1 2
I3 (C11 ) +2 (I1 − C11 )
∂I1 ∂I1 ∂I2 ∂I2 ∂I3 ∂I3 ∂I2 ∂I1
∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ

−1 −1
+2 I3 C11 + 2 I3 (I1 − C11 ) C11 (3)
∂I3 ∂I1 ∂I3 ∂I2

∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ 2 ∂ 2ψ

C2222 = 4 + (I1 − C22 )2 + −1 2
I3 (C22 ) +2 (I1 − C22 )
∂I1 ∂I1 ∂I2 ∂I2 ∂I3 ∂I3 ∂I2 ∂I1
∂ 2ψ ∂ 2ψ

−1 −1
+2 I3 C22 + 2 I3 (I1 − C22 ) C22 (4)
∂I3 ∂I1 ∂I3 ∂I2
For the stress reconstruction problem, we are assuming the constitutive tensor locally
(at each Gauss point) to have the form:

Cijkl = λδij δkl + µ (δik δjl + δil δkj ) (5)

so that the components C1111 and C2222 are:

C1111 = λ + 2µ; C2222 = λ + 2µ; (6)

where λ ≡ λ (X) and µ ≡ µ (X) may vary spatially.

For the inverse problem, by assuming C to have the form in (5) we assume that C1111 =
C2222 by (6).

But for a general hyperelastic model these components are given by (3) and (4) so that
they may not be equal unless C(1, 1) = C(2, 2).
