Lesson Plan: Needs and Wants

Day 1:
1. Read a story about needs and wants.
-The Bag I’m Taking to Grandma’s by Shirley Neitzel
-If You Give a Pig a Pancake, by Laura Numeroff (mostly
about wants)

2. Discuss the meaning of “needs” and “wants” by displaying and

talking about the Needs and Wants posters that are provided.

3. Make a chart titled “Needs and Wants”. Have students

brainstorm items that they think they need. They will generally
come up with some items that are actually wants. When a child
suggests something that is actually a want, use it as a discussion
about how come some things that we have gotten used to as
“needs” are actually “wants” when we think about our basic human
needs. Put those items in the “wants” column after discussing.

4. Read the 12 page “Easy Reader” provided. If you provide the

black and white version, you may want the students to color the
pictures.

Lesson Plan: Needs and Wants

Day 2:
1. Review the chart you made together as a class. Review the
definition of needs and wants as displayed on the posters.

2. Do the pocket chart sorting activity using the cards provided in

this pack. Before class begins, print and laminate the color sorting
cards. Hand out to students and have them sort them either in a
pocket chart, or in the middle of the floor while the students sit in
a circle around it. Encourage students to use a full sentence when
they place their card down. For example: “I know that ____ is a
need because people need ____ to live” or “I know that ____ is a
want because people do NOT need _____ to live” or “I know that
______ is a want because it is just nice to have; it is an extra.”

3. Give each child a copy of the blackline sorting activity. Have each
student complete the sorting page. Circulate and ask students to
describe why they have made their choices the way they have.
Elicit vocabulary such as, “people need ___ to survive.” and “people
just want ____ because it’s fun/comfortable/delicious, etc.”

Lesson Plan: Needs and Wants

Day 3:
1. Review the chart and the posters from the previous days. You
may wish to re-visit the pocket chart sorting cards either by
review the sort that might still be in the pocket chart, or by re-
doing the sort as a class.

2. Choose which version of the 4 Quarters blackline booklet you

would like for your students to complete. (You might want to
choose different types for different levels of students in your
class). Have them complete the booklet (coloring, drawing, printing,
etc.) and then read it with a friend.
