Food Chain

A Food Chain is the path of

food energy from one
organism to another in an
ecosystem.
organism

An Organism is any living thing.

sunlight

The energy for all living things

starts with sunlight from the sun.
producer

A producer is an organism that

makes its own food using
energy from the sun.
consumer

A consumer is an organism
that gets energy by eating
other organisms. There are 3
types of consumers: herbivores,
carnivores and omnivores.
herbivore

An herbivore is an animal that

eats only plants for food
energy.
carnivore

A carnivore is an animal that

eats other animals for food
energy.
omnivore

An omnivore is an animal that

eats other animals and plants
for food energy.
decomposer

A decomposer is an organism
that gets energy by feeding on
dead material and wastes.
Real Picture for Sorting
& Header Cards
These are great in your science
center! Students can sort the pictures
in a pocket chart and complete any
of the included recording sheets.

Carnivore, Herbivore,
Omnivore or Decomposer?
Students will use the animals picture
cards and sort them by categories.
Each page of animals is already
grouped by type. If your students are
not learning about decomposers, you
can remove the header card and
pictures. There are also 2 versions of
the recording sheet, one that includes
decomposers and one that does not.

Vocabulary
Students can write down all the words and
phrases they can think of for Food Chains. On
the next page, they can write down an
example of each type of organism in the
wheel. Pages are not numbered so you can use
them all or only the ones you are studying.
When complete, they can staple together and
store in science notebook.

Anchor Charts
The following are additional full color
anchor charts if your class is going a
little more in depth about food chains.
They can be used with the Food
Chains Animals & Energy Transfer
activity but are not needed.
Primary Producer
Primary Consumer
Secondary Consumer
Tertiary Consumer
Primary
producer

A primary producer is an organism

that is able to make its own food by
using energy from the sun.
Primary
Consumer

A primary consumer is an organism

(usually herbivores) that feed on
primary producers. Primary consumers
are eaten by secondary consumers.
Secondary
Consumer

A secondary consumer is an organism

that eats primary consumers for
energy. It can be either a carnivore or
an omnivore.
tertiary
Consumer

A tertiary consumer is an organism

that get energy from eating primary
consumers and secondary consumers.
They have no predators in their natural
habitat.
Animals & Energy Transfer
Each of the following 5 pages contains
a complete food chain beginning with
the sun. Students will show the transfer
of energy by placing the energy
arrows between pictures where energy
is usually transferred. You can use the
additional cards to label the parts of
the food chain as sunlight, producer,
primary consumer, secondary
consumer, tertiary consumer and
decomposer if your students are
studying those vocabulary words.
When complete, they can
draw/write/label their food chains on
the recording sheets.

Food Chain sheets can be laminated

and stored in individual envelopes or
folders for storage.
Animals & Energy Transfer

Food Chain Animals & Energy cards

can be used with and without “Primary

cards to show transfer of energy.
