Frequently Asked Questions – Maps Search
General Guideline Questions

1. What is a Viewport?
The user viewport represents the map area the user was looking at when making the query.

2. How do I research Real-World Results?

Start your research by typing the query into search engines to understand the user’s intent.
Once this is identified, we must determine the location intent. If the location intent is User
location, copy the user location coordinates and paste it in a mapping application. Hit the
‘Nearby’ button on the map and type the query to be able to view all the possible real-world
results.

3. The Name on the website does not match the Result.

Please keep in mind the Name accuracy can be rated Correct, if it matches Store front signs.
In addition, result name can be rated Correct if it matches ANY one of the official sources.
Please ensure to check all official sources such as website, social media, claimed pages etc.
Within these websites, you make select the ‘About Us’ section of the business website.

4. There is no classification given in the result. What should be the Name Accuracy be?
Please review the guidelines section 6.3.1. Where it mentions “Not every result will include
classification. If the classification is missing or listed as N/A, do not demote.”

Sample/Feedback Questions

1. When a Business/POI is closed or does not exist is highlighted in red what does this mean?
Our system is currently not able to recognize the rating of business/POI closed or does not
exist as Correct and it highlights the rating in Red even it matches our rating. Please ignore
this and consider your rating as Correct. We apologize for the inconvenience. Our technical
team is currently working on fixing this!

2. Per the guidelines if the Classification is Wrong, we would mark Name Accuracy as Incorrect.
The sample questions contradict this and shows Name as Partially Correct. Should I follow
the Guidelines or Simulator?
Always follow the Map Search Guidelines. In the above scenario, the correct Name Accuracy
should be Incorrect. Per the guidelines, section 6.3.2 if the classification is wrong, Name
Accuracy should in Incorrect. Our technical team is currently working to update these
sample quizzes.

3. In some Sample questions the Pin should be rated Approximate, but the simulator answer
shows it as Perfect.
Unfortunately, our simulator is not fully updated according to the recent guidelines. Please
reference the Maps Search Guidelines. When rating Pin accuracy, we always want to use
“Best Available Evidence”. If you can verify pin accuracy, via map applications, mall
directory, or official websites, you will utilize this information to identify the correct Pin
accuracy. If an exact location of the result can be identified within a single rooftop, we
expect the Pin to fall on the result POI. If it falls on any other portion of the rooftop, it
should be rated as Approximate.

5. The sample answer shows the rating for Address as Correct even when there are double
commas present in the Address.
Double commas and unnecessary spaces should be rated Correct with Formatting issues.
The reason the simulator shows it correct is because the Address on TryRating had perfect
format without extra commas or spaces. You will not face this issue in the Exam or further
during LIVE rating. Please make sure to rate any double commas, unnecessary spaces or any
other format issues as ‘Correct with formatting issues’.

6. The address does not exist on usps.com, but it is rated navigational in the Sample Quiz?
In our research process, we need to verify if the address is associated with a Business. If it
does, we need to verify on the official website if this address exists. In addition, we want to
utilize street view on Map applications to verify if a building/or plot of land is assigned this
address.

Helpful Tips for Verifying United States Addresses existence:

When Validating an address on the USPS Official Website, an Existent Address or Non- Existent
Address will be returned based on the information submitted.

Existent Address is returned when the USPS provides both the main locality postal code as well
as the +4 area designed postal code.

The locality postal code and +4

area code are both listed

Double check if the address is deliverable by clicking on the arrow to the right of the returned
address. Check the DPV Confirmation Indicator for “Y” . The “Y” indicates that the postal service
considers the address as deliverable

Delivery Post Validation – “Y”

A Non-Existent Address is returned when the zip code is missing the 4+ postal code designation.
When this is missing, it is likely that the address does not exist.

The +4 postal code number is missing

Double check if the address is deliverable by clicking on the arrow tab to the right of the
returned address. Check the DPV Confirmation Indicator for an “N”. The letter “N” indicates that
the postal service does not consider the address as deliverable.

Delivery Post is not
valid – “N”

When an Address is not returned, USPS indicates the address is Non-Existent by providing an
error. Make sure to always double check for misspellings and matching street type. The USPS
does not always autocorrect incorrect address information and may present a False-Negative.
