4) A candy maker wants to blend candy worth 45cents a pound with candy worth 85cents a
pound to obtain 200 pounds of a mixture worth 70cents a pound. How much of each type should
go into the mixture?
Solution :
(2) x 45
(3) – (1)
x + y = 70
x + ( -73.75 ) = 70
x – 73.75 = 70
x = 70 + 73.75
= 143.75
x = 143.75
y = -73.75
5) A retiree receives $5120 a year interest from $40 000 placed in two bonds, one paying 14%
and the other 12%. How much is invested in each bond?
Solution :
x + y = 40 000 (1)
0.14x + 0.12y = 5120 (2)
(1) x 0.12
(2) – (3)
x = RM 6000
y = RM 24000
6) An electronic factory, AISY Sdn Bhd producing an electronic calculator in two different
location, Mukah and Dalat. In Mukah perunit cost is RM 8.40 and fixed costs are RM 7480.
While in Dalat perunit cost is RM 7.80 and fixed costs are RM 5419. This two locations expect
to issues calculator with equal allocation. How many calculators that will be incurred by each
location.
Solution :
TC = FC + VC
Mukah = 7480
7) The total cost of tickets to the crocodile farm for 4 adults and 6 children is RM 32 while the
cost for 3 adults and 2 children is RM 19. Find the cost of each adult’s ticket and that for each
child’s.
Solution :
4x + 6y = 32 (1)
3x + 2y = 19 (2)
(2) x (3)
9x + 6y = 57 (3)
(3) – (1)
9x + 6y = 57
4x + 6y = 32
5x = 25
x = 25/5
=5
3x + 2y = 19
3(5) + 2y = 19
15 + 2y = 19
2y = 19 – 15
2y = 4
y = 4/2
=2
x=5
y=2
8) Salina and Sakira have RM 14 altogether. If Salina’s money is doubled and Sakira’s money is
tripled, they will have RM 34 altogether. How much does each girl have?
Solution:
x + y = 14 (1)
2x + 3y = 34 (2)
(1) x (2)
2x + 2y = 28 (3)
(2) – (3)
2x + 3y = 34
2x + 2y = 38
y=6
x + y = 14
x + 6 =14
x = 14 – 6
=8
x=8
y=6
9) A man keeps cows and ducks. The cows and ducks have 22 heads and 60 legs altogether. How
many cows and ducks does the man have? ( Hint : cows have 1 head, 4 legs )
Solution :
x + y = 22 (1)
4x + 2y = 60 (2)
(1) x (2)
2x + 2y = 44 (3)
(2) – (3)
4x + 2y = 60
2x + 2y = 16
2x = 16
x = 16/2
=8
x + y = 22
8 + y = 22
y = 22 – 8
=14
x=8
y = 14
Solution :
3x + 8y = 3 (1)
2y = 6 (2)
From (2), 2y = 6
y = 6/2
=3
Substitute y = 3 into (1)
3x + 8 (3) = 3
3x + 24 = 3
3x = 3 – 24
x = -21/ 3
= -7
b. Hannan and his brother has RM 98. If his brother has RM 18 lesser than Hannan, Hannan
has
Solution :
x = RM 98 – RM 18
= RM 80
Solution :
4x + 6y = 38
15x + 6y = -6
-11x = 44
= -11x
