Subject and Mathematics 10
Grade Level
Topic Distance formula
I. Lesson Objectives/ Competencies:
The learner applies the distance formula to prove some geometric properties
II. Lesson Procedure
a. Review/ Motivation
The students will help Dora, The Explorer to visit three different tourist destinations in Laguna.
This activity is called “LAGUNA ESCAPADE”

 The teacher will spin the different tourist

destination in Laguna.
 Then, the students will put the
picture of the destination to the map
that is posted on the board and paste
it to the designated town/
municipality where it was located.
 The teacher will reveal the answer
through the map that is posted on the
PowerPoint.

b. Discussion
 The teacher will distribute the picture of the tourist destination in Laguna and let them
look at the back and plot the point that is given.
 Having two points, we can get the distance from it. And getting the distance between the
two is where we can apply the “Distance Formula (√(x2 – x1)2 + (y2 – y1)2”.

DISTANCE FORMULA: √(x2 – x1)2 + (y2 – y1)2

STEPS IN SOLVING DISTANCE FORMULA
1. Label the given points
2. Substitute the values to the formula
3. Square both values
4. Add the squared values together
5. Take the square root of the equation

c. Activity
Now that students already know how to perform the Distance Formula, they will be having a
group activity.
The students will be divided into three groups. Each group will do the task that is given.
(The teacher will present the activity)

ACTIVITY:
Two cars leave STIHS in Calauan to attend to their respective meetings. One of the cars travels 3
km north and then 2 km east. The second car travels 6km south and then 5 km west. How far
apart are the cars?
Group 1
Graph the location of two cars and present your answer as if you are a broadcaster.
Group 2
Solve the distance between cars using Distance Formula and present your answer as if
you are a singer.
Group 3
Arrange the steps in solving Distance Formula and present your answer as if you are
teacher.
Group 4
Explain/ give the Distance Formula and present your answer as if you are a story teller.
Group 5
Make a yell/song about distance formula.

TOTAL 20 points

III. Evaluation
Direction: Using the given pair of points, solve the distance by following steps in solving
distance formula.
1. C (-5, -3), D (-4, -2)
2. Site a scenario where we can apply the distance formula.

IV. Closure
a. Generalization:
DISTANCE FORMULA: √(x2 – x1)2 + (y2 – y1)2

b. Assignment

I. Assignment

1. Follow Up
Solve the following problem.
Mr. Bean knows that the distance between two points is 2√5 units. If one of the
points has coordinates (3, 0) and the x- coordinate of the second point is -1, what
is the y- coordinate of the second point? There are two possible answers.
2. Study: The Midpoint Formula
a. What is the Midpoint Formula?
b. How do you determine the coordinates of the midpoint of a line segment?
