JOB DESCRIPTION

The Virtual ICU nurse uses his/her critical care skills and advanced knowledge base to monitor both
critical care and acute care patient populations from a remote or centralized monitoring center using
multiple complex computer systems and the most recent innovations in telemedicine.

SKILLS REQUIRED

 Requires excellent communication skills and is able to collaborate effectively within a team
environment.
 Must have decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
 Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and take appropriate action.
 Must have the ability to independently practice and prioritize demands in an ever-changing,
dynamic environment.
 Must demonstrate understanding of pathophysiology and common problems and solutions
associated with ICU patients.
 Must have basic proficiency with windows-based computer operations and Microsoft products
including Outlook.
 Strong assessment, organizational, and problem solving skills as evidenced by capacity to
prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
 Demonstrates proficient time management skills.

QUALIFICATIONS TO GET THE JOB

 Education:
 Graduate of an Accredited Nursing Program / Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
 Licensure:
 State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) and any relevant unit specific certification
requirement.
 Experience:
 At least two (2) years of ICU/intensive care/critical care nursing experience.
 Six (6) months nursing experience (in an acute setting)
 Experience in a teaching/academic hospital
 Two (2) Years travel experience as a Registered Nurse
 Certifications:
 Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months of hire.
 Critical Care Nurse (CCRN) certification.
 Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) at, or within six months of hire.
WHAT THE WORK WOULD BE LIKE

A Virtual ICU Nurse would:

 Plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans based on patient assessment to optimize
outcomes and maximize available resources.
 Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate. Collaborate as needed
across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and
spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
 Deliver expert virtual care to patients in a timely manner and report any abnormal or pertinent
findings to medical providers, charge nurse, and supervisors as appropriate.
 Complete virtual rounds on patients including camera rounds, interpretation of most recent
data, scoring trends, and electronic health records per protocol.
 Evaluate learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education
appropriate to age, culture, specific circumstances, and condition.
 Perform video assessment of his/her patient, monitor his/her patient’s vital signs and other
physiologic data using technology and specialized software.
 Effectively delegate patient care to ancillary personnel. May also percept student nurses and
new hires.
