Layer Organization
In the same way that objects are organized in a layout; top to bottom, front to
back; layers are also organized. That is, the layer on top is in front of all the other
layers in the layout. That means all the objects in the top layer are on top of all the
objects that are in layers behind or below.
In the same way that objects can
be dragged up and down in the list of
objects and thereby reorganized in a
layout, layers can also be dragged up
and down in the list of layers to reorder
them. The main difference is that all the
objects on the layer are moved with the
layer.
Finally, in the same way that vector
objects are cut in sequence, from the

means for cutting operations, the bottom
object on the bottom layer is cut first, and the top object on the top layer is cut last.
See picture 4.

The Active Layer

Once you start working with layers, you need to know what layer you’re working
in. When you create a new object, import an object, or create a group; what layer
does that object or group
end up on? The short
answer is that any new or
imported object will land on
the active layer. In addition,
any group that’s created
with the group command
will be placed on the active
layer.
Ok, so in a multi-layer
document, which layer
is active? The Object
Manager will tell you. At the

you need to exercise caution. When you
change a layer’s properties by clicking on one of its icons, you will often make that
layer active. If you create a group by dragging and dropping objects in the list, you
will make the layer you’re operating on active.
In short, make sure the layer you want to work in is active. If you’re not careful,
you may add objects to a layer unintentionally.

Using Layers to Re-draw a Logo

One of the first applications we found for layers was to redraw customer artwork
and logos. We converted their artwork from bitmap to vector.
In this application we
place the original artwork on
a layer, turn the layer off for
printing and editing. Then
create a new layer in front of
the bitmap layer and redraw
the customer’s art on the
new layer. This locks the
original artwork and permits
you to draw on top using the
original as a reference. See
picture 6.
Picture 6: You can use layers to re-draw a logo.
Conclusion
As you can see, layers have a number of useful functions. So far we’ve only
explored their usefulness in one single page application. Next time we’ll examine
additional applications.

We like to open up our inks and stir them prior to use. The
plasticizing agents will sometimes separate from the oils in the

stir the ink until it is smooth and creamy. We use an ink spatula
