Site Recording activities on site

Inspectio  Activities on site are recorded in a daily
n inspection template. Details noted include
equipment utilized, idle and broken down,
materials delivered on site, personnel on
site, operations and weather
Type of plant on site
 Motor grader – spreads material to create
flat surfaces.
 Smooth wheeled roller compactor – used to
compacts soils
 Sheep foot roller compactor – used to
compacts fine grained soils with the aim of
removing air voids.
 Crawler excavator – excavates earth and
loads onto dump trucks
 Concrete mixer truck – mixing &
transporting concrete
 Dump truck – hauls and dumps material
from one location to another
 Vehicle mounted crane – used to deliver
heavy construction materials –
reinforcement
 Water boozer – used to carry and spray
water on site
 Asphalt mixing plant - Used to manufacture
asphalt concrete
 Concrete batching plant – Manufacture of
concrete
Work methodologies
Filling work methodology
 Preparation of filling surface – clearing
vegetation, levelling & compaction.
 Survey setting out – establishing of centre
line and control pegs
 Filling – Spray existing layer, dump
material, spread, scarify, spray with water,
mix the material thoroughly, level using the
grader, compact using the ship-foot & the
flat roller each two passes.
 Testing/quality check – Field Density Test,
survey levels, proof rolling test.
 Defects to check – lamination, wet spots,
heaving.
Cutting work methodology
 Transverse cutting method was used.
Excavation advanced from one end or both
ends of the entire cross-section width and
depth.
 Excavation done by bulldozers, excavators
& dump trucks for hauling the material.
Concrete structures
Box culverts
 Foundation excavation – open excavation
method was used. Treatment applied for
unsuitable foundations with highly plastic
soils was rock filling at 250m thick layers.
 Blinding concrete – 100mm thick blinding
concrete (Class 15) laid and levelled with
the aid of survey controls.
 Installation of reinforcement – preparation
done on the workshop & installed using
hand tools on site in accordance with the
drawings.
 Formwork – panel boards used, supported
on steel props and timber purlins.
 Concrete casting – in situ concreting done in
2 stages. 1st stage – bottom slab, kicker
walls toe beam & apron. 2 nd stage will be
the side walls, wing walls & the top slab.
Concrete mixed in the batching plant and
transported to site by mixer trucks.
Procedures for detection of errors
Depends on info provided in the contract
documents/specifications, drawings and
instructions issued.
Earthwork detection of errors
Lamination – if during compaction a thin layer
is formed which does not bond with the existing
layer.
This could indicate a variation in moisture
content between the two layers, over
compaction of a layer or the layer compacted
could be very thin.
Heaving – indicates high levels of moisture
content in the layer. Remedy to this would be to
scarify the layer and allow it to dry out before
compaction.
Wet spots – spots with excessive moisture than
required. Indicates non-uniform mixing of the
soil and water.
Concrete structure detection of errors
Concrete – pouring height not greater than
1.5m, vibration done for 10sec at intervals of
300mm, continuity in placing to avoid
formation of cold joints, observe for honey-
combing, cracks & air bubble, and levels.
Formwork – plumpness, water tightness, clean,
strong, adequate lap, lateral bracing & spacer
blocks.
Reinforcements – diameter, number, spacing,
overlap, cover to reinforcement, stools, proper
binding.
Survey – centre line and controls, location of
joint
Materials – check slump, cast cubes.
Materials

Survey Excavation levels for pipe culvert - to confirm

as built results

Highway Road design manual - Geometric design of

roads.
Road classification – this road can be classified
as an urban arterial road.
Design controls – topography, land use and
physical features, environmental considerations,
road safety considerations, road function and
control of access, traffic volume and capacity,
design speed and other speed controls, design
vehicle and vehicle characteristics, economic
and financial considerations.
Cross-section – min camber to be 2% and not
greater than 4% (adopted 2.5%), recommended
lane width – 3.5m, desirable shoulder width
1.5m – 2.5m, side slopes for cut and fill
conditions given in table 6 – 13 of road design
guidelines for urban roads.
Min. width of median to be 1.5m
Horizontal alignment properties – sight
distance Table 6-1 gives the values of sight
distances depending on the design speed, min
radii & length of horizontal curves (Table 6-2,
6-4), super elevation curves, vertical
curves(6.4), shoulders, central reserve (6.6.6)
Civil 3D training
Importing survey point groups, creating
surfaces, creating alignments, profile creation
and design.
Structures/ Culvert quantity calculation for reinforcements,
formwork, earthworks, finishes and concrete –
Drainage excel spreadsheets used.
