Trust in Allah, but tie your camel

“Trust in Allah, but tie your camel” is a popular proverb that emphasizes the importance

of self-initiative. I did not really agree with it, but later I had to agree. How can we expect to

receive help from Allah when we do nothing to help our self? I have learned it by a tragic event

happened to a best friend. She failed in her public exam due to her carelessness in studies, which

led her to misfortune.

It happened when we were studying in an intermediate school. Her name is Afshin. She is

my best friend. She is fair, pretty with dimple cheeks. She and I first met each other when we

were in 11th grade. We were very close to each other. So, whenever we find difficulties in any of

the subject we used to help each other and solve the problems.

Before appearing the public exam she was busy in a relation with a boy and always her

busy in chatting and gossiping with each other. She was really disturbed and did not take much

preparation for her studies. During the test exam she always took help from others and passed by

low grades. But when she was going to appear in the public exam, she was really helpless and

just hoped that Allah will help her.

As the time was passing, she did not give any importance to studies but she was making

much effort to keep her relation alive by giving much time to her boyfriend. On the other hand,

she was preparing her exams by praying to Allah to help her and pass her but without her doing

any studies at all. She was praying a lot but little or no studies at all. She had faith. She really

believed that she will pass the exams without her reading any of the books that needed to be

read, without her studying anything. And of course she failed.

She was so upset and disappointed as she had many good wishes for her future life. Once

I asked her what is her aim in life? She said “I want to be a cardiologist and help the poor by

providing free treatment.” So her aim was to study in medical institution, in order, to become a

cardiologist, so that she could help the poor villagers. But she could not achieve her goal. After a

few months later, she reappeared the exam and passed but the grade was not enough for the

medical studies. Finally, she took admission for business studies.

In conclusion, I can say that, we are a student and if we want help with our exams, with

our projects, homework, grades and so on, we have to study, we have to show that we are

interested and that we want to be good at everything we do and by doing this, by showing that

we are interested, we might not even have to ask Allah and we will receive that which we need.

And if we do ask for help, we will surely receive it.
