FOCUSING FARMERS AND FISHERMEN: A REFLECTION PAPER

Farmers and fishermen are thought to be one of the most important component of
the agricultural sector. They are also called the backbone of the economy that forms the
basis for food and nutrition security and provide raw materials for industrialization. These
are important factors that allows progress to take place in the society. Despite of this, the
farmers and fishermen were still being considered as one of the disadvantaged or the
marginalized people in the society.
I agree with what Collins (2013), the director of the National Instituted of Health,
USA said that there’s a well-understood correlation that as the economy of a country
improve , so the health of the citizens improve. What may be less obvious is that the
opposite is also true-improving the health of the citizens of a nation can result in economic
growth because there will be more people ale to conduct effective activities in the
workforce. Being farmers and fishermen, it was a great joy and hope for us knowing that
the government is considering us as one of their number one priority on their plans and
objectives in making the country more progressive. Health care is one of the important
primary need in our rural community yet being neglected most of the community. What
was stressed by one of the speaker about the traditional ways of healing such as “hilot” or
drinking what is believed an herbal medications and giving birth in the community by a
non-professional practitioner is rampant in our community. Aside from the location that is
located far from the hospitals, the high cost of hospital fees makes them to use the
traditional ways as mentioned as their last resort. The programs of the government which
is promoting health by ensuring easy access on healthcare by providing assistance would
boost our overall condition as an individual, a family and a community. For instance, if a
person’s health and well-being is compromised, he/she can’t do activities to sustain his/her
daily living. This would be worst if the affected ones were people like us who are living in
remote areas and having no to less income. We are incapable of seeking healthcare
attention.
Better health is central to human happiness and well-being. The vision of the
administration for this country about uplifting our economic status starts their first step by
addressing the major problems faced by its countrymen especially those who are at the
bottom. One of which is the accessibility to healthcare of every individual in the country
despite of their status in life because everyone is entitled with their right to health.
