Types of index

1. Increasing scale: increasing value as the


pollution level increases
2. Decreasing scale: decreasing value as the
pollution level increases
Role of Index
• Numerically summarizes the information from
multiple parameters into a single value (e.g. WQ)
• The single value can be used to compare data from
several sites
• It can be used to look at trends over time on a
single site
