x+1
(i) Find all asymptotes (vertical and horizontal).
(ii) Find all local (relative) minima and maxima. Justify your answer. You may
use the second derivative test.

(b) Use L’Hopital’s rule to evaluate

2x − 1
lim .
x→0 3x − 1

(c) Consider the equation x2 + 3x + xy = 4. Find the equation of the tangent line at
the point (1, 0).

(d) Differentiate the following functions with respect to x:

(i) f (x) = x2 ex−1 ,

(ii) f (x) = xcos x ,
e−x +1
(iii) f (x) = cos2 x

2. Related Rates
A stalagmite is in the form of a perfect circular cone. Its height is 200mm and is in-
creasing at a rate of 3mm/century. Its base radius is 40mm and decreasing at a rate of
0.5mm/century. Is the volume of the stalagmite increasing or decreasing and at what
rate? [Hint: the volume of the stalagmite is V = π3 r2 h, where r is the base radius and h
is the height.]

3. Optimization
A rectangle is inscribed in the semi-ellipse x2 + 4y 2 = 1, with y ≥ 0 as shown in the
diagram. Find the greatest possible area such a rectangle can have.
