Homework Milica Tatomir I5

1. People call Greg Mortenson a hero because he has helped to build more than sixty
schools in mountains in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
2. He hates being called a hero.
3. He was born in the United States, but he grew up in Africa because his parents were
teachers.
4. He started climbing mountains at age 11, when he first climbed Mount Kilimanjaro.
5. He couldn’t reach the top of K2 because he was exhausted and he was unable to walk
properly.
6. He found himself in the village of Korphe when he got lost while he was descending
of K2 and by accident stumbled into the tiny village.
7. In Korphe he realized that there were no schools in the village and he decided to do
something about it.
8. Pupils were sitting on the ground outside writing in the sand, without teacher.
9. He decided to come back and build a school for them.
10. Greg managed to collect money by making a charity organization called “Pennies for
Pakistan” where many people donated pennies and after three years of fundraising
he went back to Korphe and kept his promise.
11. Girls in Pakistan can get married by the age of 12 and have kids at the age of 15.
12. He could change that custom by educating young girls who would still be in schools
after the age of 15 and later they could make an income and invest in their families,
also they could have more and healthier children later then if they got children by the
age of 15.
13. The African proverb is “If you educate a boy, you educate an individual. If you
educate a girl, you educate a community.”
