Hybrid EGT

Description:

A hybrid energy system includes a GTG configured to provide a full-load power output and a storage
device configured to store energy. The hybrid energy system includes a generator step-up transformer,
wherein the GTG and the storage device are electrically co-located on a low side of the generator step-
up transformer.

Details:

The Hybrid EGT system combines three major enhancements to the existing peaker plants:

- the addition of a battery energy storage system,

- an upgraded emissions control system
- new groundbreaking control system

One of the Hybrid EGT’s most valuable functions is its ability to respond instantaneously to the needs of
the electric grid. It is able to do so by utilizing an advanced 10 MW/4.3 MWh lithium-ion battery energy
storage system (BESS).

For the gas turbine to operate at partial load (0.5 MW to 50 MW) and still remain emissions compliant,
the emissions control system required an upgrade. The upgrade consisted of a change to the turbine’s
water injection algorithm, enhanced design of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system with an
optimized ammonia injection algorithm to control emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and a new carbon
monoxide oxidation catalyst.

At the heart of the entire system is an advanced Hybrid Control System (HCS), which ensures that the
Hybrid EGT delivers the expected power output by optimizing the blend between the battery and the
gas turbine. The control system is groundbreaking because it is the first time a gas peaker and battery
are integrated together to bring the benefits of each into one seamless and interoperable system. The
control algorithms developed for the various use cases were designed specifically for this project, but
have countless applications throughout the electric utility industry.

Benefits:

- Best solution to cater the needs of reliabile and fast switching demand applications.
- Because of its quick-start, fast-ramping characteristics, the Hybrid EGT is extremely valuable for
grid reliability services, such as spinning reserves.
- Ability to provide immediate response and extremely fast ramping (less than three minutes to
ramp up to full load.)
- With hybrid EGT traditional peaker plants can act as spinning reserves and Regulation up,
Regulation down services.
