Student-Centered Multimedia Project

Project Title
"That's News to Me"

General Project Goal for Students


Students will synthesize expository text by researching local and global
communities in order to create an appropriately organized and purposefully
structured article.
Specific Outcomes
Students will produce their own article with deliberate text structure and
organization in their writing.

Lesson Description
Students will apply their understanding of text structure , research skills, and
writing composition to create their expository article.

Timeline

Day 1
Pre-assessment : Students will take a short four-question quiz in the app or
website Quizizz that reviews previous expository terms and concepts.

Day 2
Students will learn how to identify different types of text structure by watching
Edpuzzle video and answering guided questions. Then, students will answer
an Exit Ticket.
Day 3
Students use a given prompt and graphic organizer to structure their ideas for
their own essay.

Day 4

Students will connect text structure and author's purpose by watching an


Edpuzzle video, answering questions and completing short Exit Ticket.
Day 5
Students will draft an essay, edit and revise the essay, then they will use a
newspaper template on Google Docs .

DECIDE Phase

Teacher role: I will help students develop their ideas for their expository essay .

Student role: Students will decide which text structure to use in their essay.

DESIGN Phase

Teacher role: I will guide students to develop their outlined ideas .

Student role: Students will sketch a graphic organizer that specifies their ideas based on prompt.

DEVELOP Phase

Teacher role: I will create opportunities for students to construct an expository essay with
purposeful text structure based on a prompt.

Student role:
Students will produce an expository essay within an digital template and add
graphic elements to complement their purpose.
EVALUATE Phase

Teacher role: I will provide a space for students to embark on self-discovery and discourse to
improve essay.

Student role: Students will analyze and practice academic conversation to improve writing.
