Active and Passive Voice
Basic Rules:
1. Identify the subject, the verb and the direct object. STVDO
Ella baked a birthday cake
S TV DO
2. Change the object into the subject.
A birthday cake was baked by Ella.
Object auxiliary verb+ past participle Subject
3. Put the suitable helping verb or auxiliary verb
4. Change the verb into the past participle of the verb.
5. Add the preposition ‘by’
6. Change the subject into the object.
Exercise 1. Underline the verb in each sentence and identify if the voice is Active or Passive.
Example: The girl recited the poem. - Active
__________________1. The Committee announced the holding of the prestigious contest.
__________________ 2. Nomination forms are available at the Secretary’s office.
__________________ 3. The criteria for judging the nominees are drawn up by the Board of Judges.
__________________ 4. Prices were donated by the civic organizations.

Exercise 2. Fill in the blank with the passive form of the verb in the parenthesis. (Present Form)

Exercise 3: Rewrite the following sentences changing the Active voice to Passive voice.
Example: The guests enjoyed the party.
Answer. The party was enjoyed by the guests.
1. The creation myth explained the origin of the world.

Exercise 4: Rewrite the following sentences changing the Passive Voice to Active Voice.
Example: The walls are painted by them.
Answer. They paint the walls.
