Review – Chapter 5 Assignment

*NOTE: Know the difference between being asked to “expand” and to “factor.”

5.1 Multiplying Polynomials

• Be able to do FOIL/the distributive property to multiply polynomials

Pg 256 Qs 1d), 3

5.2 Special Products

• Recognize that (a – b)(a + b) is a2 – b2. This saves you time, so you don’t have to do
FOIL/the distributive property

Pg 256 Q 7be

5.3 Common Factors

• Be able to determine the greatest common factor between terms in a polynomial

• Be able to factor out the greatest common factor from a polynomial

Pg 256 Qs 9, 10ab, 11

5.5 Factoring expressions of the form ax2 + bx + c when a, b, c are nonzero integers

• Factor out the GCF first, if any

• Find two integers that sum up to give b AND multiply to give ac
i.e. ( ) + ( ) = b and ( )( ) = ac
• Use the “long way” to factor

Pg 257 Qs 17ace, 18

5.4 Factoring expressions of the form x2 + bx + c when b and c are nonzero integers

• Factor out the GCF first, if any

• Find two integers that sum up to give b AND multiply to give c
i.e. ( ) + ( ) = b and ( )( ) = c
• Use the shortcut method to factor

Pg 257 Q 14ace

5.6 Factor a perfect square trinomial and a difference of squares

• Factor out the GCF first, if any

• Recognize that (a + b)(a + b) should be simplified to (a + b) 2 as factored form
• Recognize that a2 – b2 in factored form is (a – b)(a + b)

Pg 257 Qs 19, 22bcd
