FIRST TIMERS GUIDE

Pakistan Student Associati on in Trondheim, NTNU

List of general guidelines for new Pakistani students; coming first time to Trondheim, Norway

Hopefully, by now most of you would have received the admission offer and applied for visa. As soon as
you get a visa it would be time to book a ticket because if you delay, it would keep on getting expensive.
Best choice for the selection of airline depends on you, but, PIAC from Pakistan to Oslo, and then
Norwegian Airline from Oslo to Trondheim will be the cheapest and the fastest route possible (if booked
on time).

Do not forget to subscribe for the orientation week at NTNU as this would be lifetime experience and
nothing could take its place later on. You will soon be receiving an email from the international office at
NTNU to subscribe for it.

1 Items to carry along

Below are some of the items to carry with you while coming first-time to Norway.

1.1 Clothing
1.1.1 Casual
All you want to carry along should be casual there might be very little need for formal clothes. These
should include all you normally wear specially T-shirts, jeans, trousers, casual shirts etc.

1.1.2 Formal
Although there might be very less need for formal clothing you should carry at-least one pant suit,
couple of formal shirts and ties.

1.1.3 Shoes
One pair of formal shoes to go along your suit, a pair of casual shoes one pair of joggers and a pair of
slippers are sufficient.

1.1.4 Miscellaneous
You might want to carry socks/warm socks, good leather gloves, warm caps, sweaters, a couple of warm
hoodies (better if water-proof) and some extra under-garments.

1.1.5 Do not carry

You should not carry with you winter jackets and shoes, as good quality winter jackets and shoes are
hard to find in Pakistan in summer and also carrying stuff like this would most likely increase the size and
weight of your luggage. You can find a huge variety of good quality winter shoes and jackets at quite
reasonable prices in Norway.

1.2 Bed-linen
If you have booked a single room with SiT, there would be a bed, a table, a chair and a cup-board in your
room. You should bring with you good quality bed linen; bed-sheets, bed and pillow covers and try to
bring extra pair of these things so that if a pair of these things need to be washed you can use the other.
Do not carry with you blankets and pillows to avoid increasing your luggage size, as you can buy these
here. Also the weather in August will be quite moderate and you can survive a couple of nights with
room heating even if you are very sensitive to cold.

1.3 Personal grooming kit

Make sure you carry along your daily usage personal care stuff in excess for a couple of months. These
would include hand soap, shampoos, tooth-paste, shaving cream and other things that fall into the said
category. Also bring along one or two extra towels as you might like.

1.4 Cutlery/Kitchen stuff

You might want to carry along a plate, a spoon, a glass, a cutting knife and also a flat non-stick pan for
making flat bread (I recommend that because I couldn’t find one from here). If you want to you can also
carry some ready-made masalas and mixes with you. Since there are students living prior to you in the
housing provided to you, so you might find a lot of kitchen utensils in the kitchen and also if you have
some problem in using someone else’s items you can buy kitchen utensils from local markets. If you still
want to carry along some stuff for immediate usage then carry a small non-stick pan and a spatula for
practicing your new found cooking skills.

1.5 Electronics
The plug type used in Norway is shown, make sure that all of your plugs are like this or buy convertors.
Other than that you might want to carry an electrical extension. You will be needing a Wi-Fi router if you
want to use wireless internet in your apartment. Try to carry a 5m LAN cable as well.

Remember the lights in Norway are golden yellow so if you feel like you want white lights so buy some
holders, wire, plug and energy savers.

1.6 MISC.
 If you drink tea try to bring your supply of dry milk powder since it will be a cheaper option for
you.
 Bring a couple of sets of photocopies of your documents (when the semester starts you will be
given some credit by the NTNU for photocopying and printing).
 Try to carry a couple of notebooks with you.
 Remember to carry a couple of photocopies of your admission letter with you, since you will be
asked to show them during your travel.
 Bring some passport sized photographs, since these are quite expensive in Norway.
 If you wear spectacles bring one or two extra just in case of emergency.
 Bring your Quran and Ja-e-Namaz (If you want).
