PROGRAMS IN
MASSACHUSETTS

DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH

DIVISION OF DRUG REHABILITATION

160 NORTH WASHINGTON STREET

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS 02114

Introduction

The Division of Drug Rehabilitation, Department of Mental

Health, is mandated to publish annually a directory of drug

treatment facilities within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The Division has expanded this directory to include drug-related

services as well as drug treatment agencies, regardless of funding,

to assist public agencies and private citizens in locating appro-

priate services.

Any questions regarding services should be directed to the

appropriate area or regional DMH office. Questions regarding this

directory or requests for additional copies may be sent to:

f
Guide to Using the Directory

Before choosing an agency for treatment, it is important to

determine the geographic area and the type of service most appro-

priate for one's needs.

Geography

The Department of Mental Health has divided the Commonwealth

into seven geographic regions, identified numerically, from Region

I, the western-most part of the state, to Region VI, the Boston

Area. There is no Region VII, but Region IV is divided into Regions

IV-A and IV-B. By using the alphabetical town listing, one may easily

determine the DMH Region of a particular locality.

The regions have been subdivided into catchment areas. There

are 41 areas within the state. Every region and most areas have

designated staff people to coordinate and monitor drug treatment

services within their region or area. By consulting the individual

regional and area office listings, (presented before each region) one

can easily obtain a phone number and address of an appropriate staff

person. Area Drug Coordinators should be consulted when services

cannot be easily located via the directory or questions cannot be

answered regarding treatment. For those areas which do not have

designated area drug staff, Regional Drug Coordinators should be

consulted
Type of Service

There is a great diversity in the types of services provided.

Prevention programs, which may consist of recreational activities and

drug education, as well as 24-hour residential programs, have been

included in this manual. Not every service provided by an agency is

listed. Individual listings, however, will indicate the general types

of services provided.

One should determine whether weekly counseling sessions in-

tensive residential care, recreational activities, or medical care

are the most appropriate services. If an individual is not certain

which type of service is needed, the best thing to do is to contact

the program.

There are some programs providing services to specific groups,

i.e., women's services, individuals needing methadone maintenance or

detoxification, individuals involved with the criminal justice system,

and individuals needing vocational rehabilitation. These programs, as

well as the residential programs, are included in the main body of the

directory, but are also listed with addresses and phone numbers in the

appendices.

Steps to Locating Treatment

Step I. Refer to the alphabetical town listing to determine both

the region and area. Record the regional number and area name.

-ii-
Refer to appropriate pages for listing.

Step 2 Refer to area pages. If the services are found,

contact the program. If no appropriate services are found after

reviewing programs, contact the Area Drug Coordinator to see if the

services you are seeking are provided in that area.

Step 3 . If no appropriate services are available in the area,

review the programs listed which provide services in other areas,

within that region. If services are listed, contact the program.

Step 4 . If you are unable to find appropriate services, con-

sult the Regional Drug Coordinator to see if the services you are

seeking are provided in your region.

Step 5 . If you are unable to locate services in either

your area or region, contact the Regional Drug Coordinator for a

referral to another region or the Division of Drug Rehabilitation

for assistance in obtaining treatment within the Commonwealth.

Addresses and phone numbers for Regional Drug Coordinators are

listed on the following pages:

Region I 1 Region IVB 56
