Learning Objective Number and Number Sense

The objective of the lesson is what
students will be able to do as they 2.1 The student will
finish the activity. For this a) read, write, and identify the place and
objective, use the Standards of value of each digit in a three-digit

Activity Describe what the The purpose of this lesson is to introduce place value
learning activity will be. What will and what it means. The teacher will start the lesson
the students and the teacher be introducing the topic and going over what place value
doing? (This includes what they means. This will be shown on the smart board while the
are doing with the technology). whole class is sitting on the carpet. Throughout the first
multiple slides there are descriptions and examples the
teacher will do with the kids. The second slide shows
two numbers and asks if they are the same, to explain.
I will ask the class this question and then call on
students who are raising their hand to answer me and
explain their thinking. There is then a short video to
watch and then explanations using base ten blocks.
After this whole introduction, there is a monster quiz I
will go through with the class while they are still on the
carpet, calling on students to answer questions. This is
followed by a few more examples and one video, then
it is time for the students to help out. It shows tally
marks and two place value boxes. I will call on a
student to come up one at a time to write one of the
numbers in the correct place value box. They will do
this while the rest of the class sits quietly on the carpet,
and once they write the answer on the smart board, I
will ask the class to give me a thumbs up if they agree,
or a thumbs down if they disagree. I will do this to
complete all the numbers on the slide. The next slides
show examples using money to represent numbers.
They will take turns coming up to the white board to fill
in the boxes labeled hundreds, tens and ones with
each coin. The following slide has two links for
websites to go to where the students can practice with
interactive ten frames. (This is optional, the teacher can
do this or can skip it and go right to the last activity).
They will stay at the carpet, but use ipads to do this
with a partner quietly. Once they finish one, they will
show the teacher to check their work. Then there is one
final quick video to watch. After this, the students will all
go back to their seats to do the last activity shown on
the smart board with a partner. Each group will need a
place value mat, base ten blocks, paper, dice and a
pencil. They will roll the dice and write the digit into the
tens place. Then roll the dice again, and write it in the
ones place. Then they will build the whole number
using the base ten blocks. Once they complete this,
they will call the teacher over to show me they have
completed it correctly. The website says to take a
picture of their completed work, but the teacher will go
check it instead once they raise their hands that they
are done. They will continue to do this with their partner
until math block is over. Once they get comfortable with
this, then the teacher will move on to add in the
hundreds place and practice that. This lesson will cover
Standard 2.1 a, and once this is worked on, the teacher
will move on to introduce b, c and d.
