Learning Objective Strand: Measurement and Geometry
2.9 The student will tell time and write time to
the nearest five minutes, using analog and digital
clocks.
Activity First, the teacher will do a brief refresher on telling
time using whole group instruction. The teacher will
go over which hand is minutes and which is hours,
counting the hour and counting the minutes up to
the nearest 5 minutes, and also knowing there are
60 minutes in one hour. The teacher will go through
some examples and have the students answer and
tell what time is shown. Then each student will go to
their desks and work on an iPad using the Kahoot!
App. On this app, they will create their own quiz
about telling time and/or writing time to the nearest
5 minutes. They can make their own questions any
way they want to, as long as it relates directly to the
standard of telling time. They will keep their quiz

Strand: Number and Number Sense
3.2 The student will
a) name and write fractions and mixed
numbers represented by a model;
b) represent fractions and mixed
numbers, with models and symbols;
and
c) compare fractions having like and
unlike denominators, using words and symbols (>, <,
=, or ≠), with models.
Each student will be placed into a group of 3. They
will use the Cue Think app to solve 3 math problems,
working together as a group to find the answers.
They will make their 3 problems all related to
fractions, making one problem for each of the three
standards, (a-c). Students will use the phases
provided in the app which are Understand, Plan,
Solve and Review to solve the problem and show all
their steps. This app takes them through these four
phases, where they write down their work and the
steps they took to solve the problem. Once they
create their solution, the app provides a checklist to
help them review their work. Once they complete
the problem, Cue Think turns their work into a
TLED 430
short, 5 questions max. The teacher will give the
students mini analog clocks they can use at their
desks to help them create questions. Once they
finish the quiz, they will pair with another student
and they will take turns doing each other’s quiz. If
there is time, they can switch a second time and do
another student’s quiz. The teacher will be walking
around during this time to help students if they need
it and answer any questions.

“thinklet,” which puts their work into a video that
shows how they got the answer and takes us
through all their steps to get there. The students will
do this for all 3 problems and create thinklets. The
teacher will be walking around at this time to assist
as needed. Once all groups are completed, we will
meet back as a whole group. Each group will take
turns coming up front one at a time to present one
of their three thinklets to the class. As a class, we
will go through their problem-solving steps with
them to respond, give feedback and ask any
questions the students may have. This is a great way
to allow students to see how others might be doing
things differently than they are that could help them
become a better problem solver. This also gets
students working together and comfortable talking
in front of the whole class.
