Pre-Lab #5: Analysis of TUMS (Antacid)

Theory: The purpose of this lab is to analyze TUMs an antacid. In doing so we will be

determining the amount of acid neutralized by an antacid tablet using a back titration. An antacid

is a base that reacts with an acid. The number of moles of acid that can be neutralized by a single

tablet of an antacid will be determined by back titration. A back titration is when the

concentration of an analyte is determined by reacting it with a known amount of excess reagent.

The remaining excess reagent is then titrated with another, second reagent. The second titration's

result shows how much of the excess reagent was used in the first titration, this allows the

original analyte's concentration to be calculated. Tums active ingredient is calcium carbonate.

Materials:

● Spatula ● Magnetic stirring bar

● Digital buret ● Pestle and mortar
● Phenolphthalein ● 250 mL flask
● 250mL beaker
● Heating/Stirring Plate
● NaOH solution
● TUMS Antacid

Procedure:
**Safety Precautions: Wear a lab coat and safety goggles. Do not ingest the antacid.

1. Clean, rinse, and fill a buret with NaOH solution. Record the molarity of the NaOH and the
initial NaOH volume reading from the buret.

2. Weigh an antacid tablet on a weighing boat and record the mass. Transfer the tablet to a clean
mortar and crush the tablet into a powder using the pestle.

3. Weigh about 0.2 grams of the crushed-up tablet powder and transfer it to a clean 250 mL
flask.

4. Measure 20 mL of the HCl using a graduated cylinder and add to the 250 mL flask. Record the
molarity of the HCl.

5. Gently swirl the flask to help dissolve the antacid. The antacid tablet may contain inactive
ingredients and so much of the tablet may not dissolve and the liquid will be cloudy. The active
antacid ingredient will dissolve and react with the acid very quickly while the liquid will remain
cloudy.

6. Add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein indicator to the flask and titrate the acid solution until it
reaches the endpoint. Record the final NaOH volume.

7. Place all chemicals in their corresponding waste containers. Clean all materials, flask,
weighing boat, graduated cylinder etc. and place them in their corresponding places.

8. Repeat steps 1-7 on two other brands of antacid tablets.

Equations:
nacid neutralized by tablet = nacid initially in flask – nacid neutralized by NaOH
% = 100% × (nacid actually neutralized) / (nacid theoretically neutralized)
Molarity = Moles of solute/Liter of solution
