Question 1:- With reference to the various approaches to ECE select any two which you think
are most appropriate for young learners. Support your answer with relevant explanation.
Answer :- As early childhood educator,we all havr our own philosophies and approaches to
education.New approach to teaching and learning can be adapted within our own environment
and information about how your philosophy of education differs from others. Now,we will
discuss two different types of approaches to ECE.
1-Maria Montessori Approach:- Maria Montessori was the first woman
physician who lived in Italy. The first Montessori school opened in the United States in 1911.In
Montessori curriculum there is a belief in sensory learning i.e children learn more by touching
seeing smelling etc. Montessori believed that the environment should be prepared by matching
the child to the corresponding material. It should be comfortable for children e.g child sized
chairs that are lightweight. There should be a homelike space for children to practice proper
self help skills such as handwashing. In order to help children focus, the teacher silently
demonstrates the use of learning material to them. Children may then choose to practice on
any material, have had a lesson about. Once children are given the lesson with the material,
they may work on it independently.

2- The Reggio Emilia Approach:- Reggio Emilia is a small town of Northern Italy.
It is developed by pedagogist Loris Malaguzzi after World War II and it derives its name from
the city. Collaboration and cooperation are inspired by this approach. Everything is alive and
connected. Children, teachers and families join together to improve the support system of our
school community.According to Emilia approach children are viewed as curious, full of
knowledge, potential etc. Teachers should be deeply aware about children’s potential. The
environment is considered as third teacher of child.Group of students stay with one teacher for
3yrs period, creating consistency in environment &relationships. The curriculum is characterized
by research on young children, including real life problemsolving peers, with numerous
opportunities for creative thinking &exploration. The projects that teachers & children engage
in are different in a number of ways it is called as thematic studies.Project topics are also
selected on the basis of an academic curiosity or social concern of parent or teachers. Reggio
teachers place a value on their ability to improve & respond to children’s predisposition to
enjoy the unexpected.
