FREE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Public transportation should be free here in Colombia as it is in Luxembourg and

Barcelona, since March 1, 2020 all buses and trains in Luxembourg can be boarded without

paying a fee, it is not a world novelty, around a hundred cities that have some type of free

public transport but only in some areas or with some restrictions such as; Only residents could

make free use of this service, in addition to the elderly and children. These initiatives

promote the use of public transport so that people use their cars less to reduce vehicle

congestion and pollution, helping to improve carbon emission levels, helping to control global

warming.

In Colombia, public transportation must be free in the future, but measures must be

implemented so that it is financed and subsidized by taxes and therefore is sustainable. In

addition, it would have to have some type of restriction to avoid saturating the system,

because at the Transportation is free, more people will choose to move simply because it is

free, generating useless mobility.

The solution to the inappropriate use of free public transport is to allow the use of all

citizens but with daily travel limits, so that they do not abuse the system, implementing a type

of personal card such as those that already exist, so that when free trips are over the user can

return to use the transport paid a minimum fee and thus be able to try to control the entire

system, a security system could also be implemented that prevents people who have already

used their free trips from entering without contributing to the system.

Public transport must be free but the government must first do feasibility studies, work on

citizen education and seek a source of funding that makes this dream possible.
