Second Generation Computer
Second Generation Computer
Okay guys next will be a second generation of computer. The time period for a
second generation is between 1956 to 1963… The main thing that differentiate
between first generation is the computer in 2nd generation is using transistor instead
of vacuum tubes. The transistor was invented at bells lab in 1947 but did not see
widespread use in computer until the late 50s which create 2nd generation of
computer The University of Manchester's experimental Transistor Computer was first
operational in November 1953 and it is widely believed to be the first transistor
computer to come into operation anywhere in the world. However it also used a small
number of tubes in its clock generator, so it was not the first fully transistorized
machine. The first fully-transistorized computer was the Harwell CADET, which first
operated in February 1955.
The transistor was far superior to the vacuum tube, allowing computers to become
smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient and more reliable than their first-
generation predecessors. Though the transistor still generated a great deal of heat
that subjected the computer to damage, it was a vast improvement over the vacuum
tube. Second-generation computers still relied on punched cards for input and
printouts for output.
