Tutorial Week 6
Chapter 2 Cellular Respiration
Oxidative Phosphorylation and Anaerobic Fermentation

Name: Shawn Brandon Gibot

Student ID: 2019278236

1. Describe the effect of proton gradient on ATP synthesis in mitochondria.

- A proton gradient is formed, and the synthase enzyme for ATP generates ATP across
the gradient. The proton gradient allows the transfer of (H+), proton from the matrix
to the internal membrane, and vice versa allowing the process of chemiosmosis and
the production of ATP to take place.

2. State two (2) shuttle systems used to transport electron from NADH in cytoplasm into
mitochondrion.
- Glycerol Phosphate Shuttle System
- Malate-Aspartate Shuttle System

3. State the total amount of electron carriers that produced from a breakdown of two
molecules of glucose during aerobic respiration.
- 6NADH + 2FADH2 per glucose

4. Distinguish two (2) anaerobic respirations.

- Lactic acid fermentation
- Alcoholic fermentation
