Title: Understanding Fractions

Relevant SC Standards:

3.NSF.1

Develop an understanding of fractions (i.e., denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) as numbers.

a. A fraction 1 𝑏 (called a unit fraction) is the quantity formed by one part when a whole

is partitioned into 𝑏 equal parts;

b. A fraction 𝑎 𝑏 is the quantity formed by 𝑎 parts of size 1 𝑏 ;

c. A fraction is a number that can be represented on a number line based on counts of a

unit fraction;

d. A fraction can be represented using set, area, and linear models.

3.NSF.2

Explain fraction equivalence (i.e., denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) by demonstrating an

understanding that:

a. two fractions are equal if they are the same size, based on the same whole, or at the

same point on a number line;

b. fraction equivalence can be represented using set, area, and linear models;

c. whole numbers can be written as fractions (e.g., 4 = 4 1 and 1 = 4 4 );

d. fractions with the same numerator or same denominator can be compared by reasoning

about their size based on the same whole.

Description: This app lesson will develop 2nd grade math students’ knowledge of

fractions.
Instructional Objective:

Students will be able to identify a fraction as a part of a whole.

Students will be able to represent fractions using set, area, and linear models.

Students will be able to label fractions on a number line.

Students will be able to match whole numbers to their fraction form.

Students will be able to compare fractions using the numerator and denominator.

Step 1 Fractions Basics and Decimals:

Students will open the app Fractions Basics and Decimals and choose the “fractions”

option on the app (the other option is learning about decimals). The students will begin

watching fun, animated videos that will introduce them to fractions and help them

develop their knowledge of fractions.

Step 2 Zap Zap Fractions:

Students will open the app Zap Zap Fractions and begin the first fraction lesson. On the

app, the fraction lessons are called “missions” and students must master these

“missions” to earn parts of a spaceship. After mastering the fraction lessons, the

students will be able to build their spaceship

Step 3 Area Models on Notes

Students will go to the Notes app on their iPads and click the button that adds a new

note. Once the new note is created, the students will click “Add Sketch.” This allows the

students to use their finger to draw on the screen as if it was a whiteboard. Then, I will

yell out a fraction and the students will represent the fraction using an area model. Once

they complete their area models, they will hold them up in the air for me to check their

work and receive participation credit. They will screenshot the correct answers to use to

study fractions.

For example, when I yell out the fraction 1/4, the students will use the Notes app to do

this:
