ASCE 7-10 inputs for Class/Category III in tnxTower:

Input Vult based

Input TIA-G Ice & Service 3-sec. w.s. as usual per TIA-G.
on Risk Cat. III
Note: ASCE 7-10 (10.1.3) allows ice per TIA-G

Input Risk Category ‘III and IV’

Note: With the current options selected above (ASCE-checked & TIA
LC’s-unchecked), this only affects the ice importance factor and does not
impact maximum wind loading

Note:
Using the ASCE 7-10 method in tnx, as shown above for Class III, leads to a slightly higher effective wind
speed (2.1% increase) and pressure (4.2% increase) than using the traditional TIA-G method where Vasd
is calculated using the following IBC conversion:

This increase is due to rounding approximation in the Eq. 16-33 conversion where the 0.6 conversion
1 0.625
factor was rounded down from the actual conversion of = .
1.6 * I I

The traditional TIA method (converting Vult to Vasd and using TIA LC’s and Importance Factor) takes
benefit of this reduction due to conversion rounding, whereas applying ASCE 7-10 directly avoids the
conversion altogether.
