Safety Check Photos
Quite frequently Safety is tasked with checking photos from projects both current and past for safety issues. While many
of these photos show a completed project with no work currently being done or hazards present, there are times photos
show work being completed with several hazards present. When this happens, the photo must be rejected and cannot
be used for proposals or other marketing means.

Common reasons photos are rejected include:

• Failure to wear proper PPE (Hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest, work boots, work gloves)
• Workers wearing shorts, tennis shoes, or other improper clothing
• Exposure to falls without guardrail in place or other fall prevention systems
• Spoil pile less than 2 feet from trench
• No ladder in a trench

Often, the context of the picture is unknown (e.g. what work is being done and why). We simply see the picture and spot
the hazards deeming the picture not approved.

When taking pictures, or requesting for someone to take pictures, look closely for safe and unsafe work being
conducted. All workers should be aware of site/task-specific PPE requirements. These requirements should be
discussed during the Daily Pre-Task Meeting.

What’s next for Dewberry Safety in 2020?

In 2019 Safety conducted 22 BU Safety Audits and multiple site/field visits. In 2020 we look to:
• Audit GeoTab GPS Units- 2019 saw some device issues arise. In 2020 Safety, with support from Logistics, will
work to eliminate device issues.
• Develop Dewberry Field Safety Employee Handbook- The Dewberry Surveyor Safety Handbook will be revised
and expanded to incorporate all field safety tasks.
• Conduct Safety Audits- BU Safety Audits are a great way for Dewberry Safety to get to know each office, what
they do, and helps us to familiarize ourselves with staff in each office.
• Conduct Field Safety Rides- Safety will continue riding with crews throughout Dewberry. Field safety rides allow
us to see the hazards our crews experience daily and develop controls to help them return home to their
families at the end of the day.
When Safety is an afterthought, incidents occur.
Be part of the solution – not part of the problem.
