Jokowi praises curved LRT overpass, as well

as its female designer

The Greater Jakarta LRT or LRT Jabodebek's curved section in Kuningan, South Jakarta, has not
only received two awards from the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) but also praise
from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

The President tweeted a picture of the complete section on Thursday morning with a caption
reading “One of the hardest construction parts of the Greater Jakarta LRT, the 148-meter curved
overpass, has been [completed] above the Kuningan overpass in South Jakarta.

“Congratulations to Adhi Karya. Congratulations as well to the designer, Arvila Delitriana, an

engineer from [the Bandung Institute of Technological],” the President tweeted in a posting that had
garnered more than 4,000 retweets and 22,000 likes by Friday morning.
The section was unveiled on Monday, with ministers such as Coordinating Maritime Affairs and
Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan, Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi, Public Works
and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono and State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir
attending the event.

The overpass connects parts of LRT track on Jl. Gatot Subroto and on Jl. HR Rasuna Said, which
are part of the first phase of the LRT from Cibubur in East Jakarta to Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta
via Cawang, East Jakarta.

The Greater Jakarta LRT, not to be confused with LRT Jakarta that serves the Velodrome-Kelapa
Gading route, is constructed and maintained by state-owned company PT Adhi Karya (ADHI), and
its rolling stock is manufactured by state-owned PT Industri Kereta Api Indonesia (INKA).

Arvila said the design was made possible by the balance cantilever method, which gave the 148-m
section the appearance of hanging above the ground seemingly without any ground support.

The construction work was done segment by segment with post tensioning to make sure that each
sections is balanced from each side of the construction until they meet in the middle.

“The geometry calculation and control must be calculated well, so they can meet in the middle,” the
engineer told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

She added that the most critical part of the construction was when the two section finally met,
because that would be the longest part of the bridge without a pillar, but once they were connected,
the section would be stable enough.

“So, when the weight of the LRT rolling stock burdens the track, the bridge will able to hold its
weight,” she said.

She said a weight test had to be conducted first on the long span to simulate an LRT with
passengers to confirm the bridge’s safety.

The design of the overpass in Kuningan was approved by the Public Works and Housing Ministry's
Bridge and Tunnel Safety Commission with a certificate issued on April 10.
The construction won two awards from the MURI. The first was for being the longest curved
railway overpass and was bestowed by MURI founder Jaya Suprana to ADHI president director
Budi Harto.

The second record was for the heaviest axial statistics loading test of bored pile foundation in
Indonesia.

Arvila expressed appreciation for ADHI letting her realize her designs. “The records are essentially
to prove that Adhi Karya could translate my design into a real bridge for use,” Arvilla said.

The Greater Jakarta LRT will have 17 stations in the first phase of operations, divided into three
sections. The Cibubur-Cawang section consists of Harja Mukti Station, Ciracas Station, Kampung
Rambutan Station, Taman Mini Station and Cawang Station.

The East Bekasi-Cawang section comprises Jati Bening Station, Cikunir 1 Station, Cikunir 2
Station, West Bekasi Station and Jati Mulya Station.

Meanwhile, the Cawang-Dukuh Atas section will pass the stations of Ciliwung, Cikoko, Pancoran,
Kuningan, Rasuna Said, Setiabudi and Dukuh Atas.

The total length of the rail service is planned to be 83.6 km, with line extensions reaching
Baranangsiang in Bogor, West Java, Senayan in Central Jakarta and Soekarno-Hatta International
Airport in Tangerang, Banten.

According to ADHI, the project has reached 67 percent of completion as of Nov. 1, and the first
LRT rolling stock has been parked at Harjamukti Station in Cibubur.

Progress on the Cawang-Cibubur route is at 86.2 percent, while progress on the tracks connecting
Cawang with Dukuh Atas in Central Jakarta and Cawang with East Bekasi in West Java has reached
58.3 percent and 60.5 percent, respectively.

The first phase is 43.3 km long and costs Rp 22.8 trillion (US$1.62 billion).
