Purposive Communication (COMM 1100)

Activity 5 (Mini Task): Engaging and Sharing Culture with a Foreigner

To be able to understand the concept of the multicultural communications model where


understand, connect, trust, and grow takes place, the students are tasked to meet a
foreigner within the campus and share the Filipino culture with them as well as learn
their culture.

Part 1. Meet a Foreigner and Share the Filipino Culture

1. Group yourselves into four (4) with at least 8-10 people per group.
2. Search for a foreigner (student, faculty affiliate, or resource speaker) within the
campus.
3. Document your first encounter (photo or video) and share in your report the
whole ‘picture’ of that meeting.
4. Come-up with a Report Paper and a powerpoint presentation. You may present a
video or picture collage of the encounter.

Part 2. Report Paper

1. In your report paper, make sure you discuss the following:

a. How was the first encounter/meeting? How did you approach the foreigner?
Where did it take place? Who introduced the group?
b. Did you feel awkward? Were you rejected? Or did you feel comfortable?
c. Is the foreigner open or close minded in the idea of sharing his/her culture?
d. What Filipino culture did you share (in bulleted form)?
e. What culture did the foreigner share to you (in bulleted form)? Did you have
similarities in culture (beliefs, traditions, language, religion, etc.)?
f. What have you learned from this experience?

2. Template guidelines
a. Cover/Title page (with Names of group members listed)
b. Parts should include:
-Introduction (answers from item “a”, “b” and “c” questions)
-Body (answers from item “d” and “e” questions)
-Conclusion (answers from item “f” question)
c. Font type: Tahoma or Arial; Font size: 12; Single spacing
d. Paper: Letter (8 ½ x 11)
e. No need to put it in a folder.
Part 3. Presentation

1. Each group will be given 10-15 minutes to report. Presentation should be in a


powerpoint format.
2. The group may use visuals such as posters, audio visual presentations, or
anything related as a supporting material of the topic.
