Shaye Forseth Advanced Practicum Philosophy of Education

Young children learn best when they are comfortable. When a child is uncomfortable,

they become resilient and unwilling to engage in new activities. They are unsure of their

surroundings and feel on edge. When a child is comfortable, they are more willing to expand and

experiment. They engage in more activities which allows for them to learn more, and better.

When they are able to trust and let their guards down, they are also able to allow for their brains

to retain information better. 

The role of adults in children’s learning is to facilitate for them. Adults should be there

to help the children by guiding them and providing them the tools and resources for the children

to teach themselves. Adults should be there to assist when children need it but should not believe

that the only reason a child is learning something is because of them. Children are very capable

of being their own teachers and educators, as long as they are given the proper tools and

resources. 

A supportive learning environment for young children includes developmentally

appropriate tools that will cater to their needs. This learning environment should have child sized

materials. To have a supportive learning environment also means for the children to have

supportive relationships with those in their environment. By having and creating a strong

relationship with those in their environment, the children become comfortable and willing to be

active learners. Having a lot of books, toys, mirrors, sensory tables, etc. will provide children

with support for their learning.

Materials available for children should be child sized. Seeing a child sit in a chair, table,

bed, beanbag, etc. that fits them is extremely heartwarming. You see a child who is comfortable,

confident, and relaxed. Materials should also be bright, offer new experiences, and should have

more than one designated use. Materials should be open ended and left for interpretation.

The role of culture in children's learning is very important! Different cultures have

different expectation's as to what they believe is important for children to learn. The role of

culture in children's learning is to also expose them to differences and similarities that people

may have. It is important for children to learn through experiences and learning about cultures

and how they can change is a great way for children to gain knowledge and experience. 

The role of parents and family in children's learning is to be supportive and encouraging.

Parents and families should also dedicate time to the children to ask questions about what they

are learning, and how they feel about it. Letting children be the teachers and show/tell those in

their families the activities and things they are doing during their day makes a great connection

and shows them that they care. Families should guide and facilitate children like their teachers

do. They should ask questions, make statements, and give opportunity for discussion, however,

should not tell a child they are wrong. 

An effective Early Childhood teacher asks questions that start discussions. Let

individuals explain their feelings/ideas without judgment. Provide full attention what they are

talking and show that they are listening. Expand off of children and their ideas and make them

come to life. Always support them and guide them in a way that is best for them. Provide

different activities for different learning styles and adapt to children when they need it. Never be

set on a schedule. Have flexibility. An effective teacher shows compassion and understanding

that not every day will be a good day. They take the time to make sure that those in their care

have tools needed to be successful and give them the time and space to do so.
