Subject-verb agreement in sentences with Intervening Expressions

An Intervening expression is a phrase or clauses placed in-between the subjects and

the verb. As a result, determining the correct verb can be tricky if not at all confusing. In
such cases, one just needs to remember that intervening expression do not in any way
affect the subject in terms of its singularity or plurality. So, if the subject is singular, the
verb must also be singular regardless of the intervening expression. If the subject is
plural the verb should also be plural as well. For examples:

 The teachers, not the principal, are responsible for planning the lessons taught
in each class
 Keith, who has many friends, watches movies on weekends by his lonesome.
 The actress, accompanied by her boyfriend, attends the benefit.
 The cook, as well as the waiter, works hard at the restaurant.
 Deep in the jungle the tigress, together with her cubs, is resting quietly.
