Teaching Philosophy

● I believe that everything in the classroom stems from forming quality relationships with

each student. Students will engage and learn best once they feel safe and cared for in the

classroom. Additionally, having good relationships with your students is the most

effective method of classroom management; when students feel that the teacher cares

about them and is honest and fair, students will not look to misbehave. Finally, these

strong relationships allow for open communication between students and the teacher.

This frees up students to come to the teacher with any problems or concerns so they may

be addressed. Additionally, students are more comfortable being honest about what they

do and do not understand, and are more likely to ask the teacher for explicit help and

guidance. This honesty and regular communication from the students allows for me to

best cater the instruction to the individual.

● I believe that every student has the right to a rich and rigorous education. In my

classroom, I differentiate instruction so that students at a range of ability levels can

access and engage meaningfully with the content. Each student is faced with an

appropriate challenge, and is given the scaffolding and support needed to be successful.

● I believe in designing and implementing three dimensional science lessons based on the

principles of NGSS. Students should be at the center of the instruction.

● I believe that I am a literacy teacher as well as a science teacher. Students in my class

will always be asked to read, write, and speak. The class will be structured so that they
will learn and develop literacy skills as they engage with the science curriculum. In my

class, I constantly structure and facilitate productive student talk. This allows students to

think out loud and learn from one another, while also practicing literacy and discourse

skills. This structure also allows for every student to speak and be heard during a single

class period.

● I want to help my students grow into self-confident, self-sufficient, and resilient young

adults. I want my students to be literate, to be able to think critically, and to read and take

in information with a skeptical eye.
