Chapter 4 – Qualitative Analysis of Beams and Frames

Learning Objectives 
 
 Develop  the  skills  and  techniques  in  qualitative  analysis  of  beams  and  frames 
under simple loading conditions. 
 
 Produce approximately the shear force diagram, bending moment diagram and 
deflected shape of beams and frames under simple loading conditions. 
 
 
The purpose of this chapter is to develop the skills and structural sense of students 
on  the  structural  behaviour  of  simple  structures.  Acquiring  such  skills,  you  will  be 
able to shed light on the structural behaviour of more complex structures which is 
very important to help you develop your structural sense as an engineer. 
 
In Qualitative Analysis, one should be able to:  
 
 Determine the directions of reactions of a structure. 
 Sketch the shear force diagram of a structure. 
 Sketch the bending moment diagram of a structure. 
 Sketch the deflected shape of a structure and locate the points of inflection if 
any. 
 
The  reactions,  shear  force,  bending  moment  and  the  deflected  shape  obtained 
should  be compatible with each other.  Teaching  materials  WILL  NOT  be given  and 
you are requested to read the reference as highlighted at the end of this chapter.
