Singing Music Lesson Plan: A Rope-Pulling Song
Materials needed:
Draw a Bucket of Water Song Lyrics
A.S: “Who knows what a water well is? How do we use it?”
1. Give a brief intro to history and water wells, “There are still wells today, back then wells
were the best source of getting our water. People would drop buckets of water down on a
rope and pull water up”
2. Sing the song, “I am going to teach you a rope-pulling song” “Draw a bucket of water..
For my ladies daughter..”
3. Teach the students the song.. Start by singing one song one phrase (teacher), Then have
students repeat. “I'm going to sing a line, repeat after me”
4. Add a second phrase (teacher)- have students repeat. Add the third phrase- have students
repeat.. And so on.
5. Sing all together insync, “Now lets do it all together”
6. “Now lets add a fun game to go with it” Split students into 4 groups, have each group
stand in a stand in a square.
7. For the phrases 1-3: Two pairs make a set of four. One pair stands in place while another
pair joins hands above them. All four do the oppositional arm movement with their
partners.
8. Partners join hands, moving alternate arms forward and back. Each partner always has
one arm extended and one elbow which is bent and close to the body.
9. For the fourth phrase: on the words, "You go under, sister Sally," Student 1 (who is the
partner of student 3) ducks under the arms of children 2 and 4.
10. Do this until all are "under" another's arms in this woven position.
11. One the last 2 verses, all four kids stay entwined and go around in a circle while singing
Closure: “What do you think the song was talking about? Who were they taking water too? Were
they rich or poor?”
Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . . how to listen
and identify specific parts of a song, while singing and be able to demonstrate their
understanding with movements.
