Reflection: What is Good Writing?
Writing has been a love/hate relationship for me in recent years. For most of my life growing up
it was just something that was required of me for school, and maybe that is still true. But
somehow I have grown to like to write in certain styles and about certain subjects that interest
me. I feel that one of the things I do well in writing is getting to the point. Sometimes my writing
is a knife and cuts straight to the core without any hesitation or details to make it sound better. I
guess that can be my biggest weakness, too.
The most fun I’ve had writing in this class was surprisingly our quick writes at the beginning of
every class. Not because they were short, but because they didn’t have a required length. I felt
that without the pressure of aiming for a target I could let my thoughts flow like a river straight
to the paper. It’s like when you go golfing, but instead of actually golfing you go to the driving
range. You don’t have to have the pressure of aiming, you can just reel back and let it fly. This
helped me express more clearly my thoughts and attitudes and ultimately created a better piece
of writing.
A goal I have for myself is to understand better how to write more detailed papers. I want to look
at a mountain sized essay and be able to take it with ease because I know that the details add up.
By being more specific and using sensory details not only can I make a paper longer, but make it
appeal to all senses and give the paper life. I hope to write more in the future, It’s growing on
me.
