FLUID MECHANICS – II

Assignment 2
1. A trapezoidal channel having bottom width 6 m, side slopes 2 horizontal to 1 vertical and
bed slope 0.0016. The normal depth of flow is 0.963 m. A weir is placed across the
channel backs up the water to a depth of 2 m. calculate how far upstream the depth is 1.5
m. Take Manning’s n = 0.025. Use the direct step method for computation. Take two
steps. Also find out the type of water surface profile.
2. A control sluice spanning the entry of a 4 m wide rectangular channel having a mild slope
admits 16 m3/s at a velocity of 3 m/s. Find whether a hydraulic jump is expected in the
channel downstream from the sluice.
3. Water flows at the rate of 1 x 10 6 cm3/s along a channel of rectangular section 1.75 m
width. Calculate the critical depth. If a hydraulic jump formed at a point where the
upstream depth is 25 cm, what would be the rise in water level and power lost in the
jump?
4. A wide rectangular channel laid to a slope of 1 in 1000 carries a discharge of 3.5 m 3/s per
metre width at a depth of 1.6 m. Find out the value of Chezy’s constant C. Consider the
flow to be uniform.
If the actual depth varies uniformly from 1.5 m at an upstream location to 1.7 m at a
location 300 m downstream or in other words the flow is gradually varied, what will be
the value of Chezy’s constant C?
